    DC Ikaruga display problems

    OK.

I'm using a PAL Dreamcast, booting Ikaruga JPN with a gameshark, attempting to display on an NTSC compatible TV, using a RGB cable.

This works fine for some US / JPN games. Ikaruga and my other imports also run fine on my monitor, using a VGA adaptor.

Trouble is, about half my imports won't display properly on the TV. They are in colour, but offset by about 1/3 vertically. Specifically, the top 1/3 of the screen is black, then the game starts displaying, and it runs off the bottom of the screen. This is the case not just for Capcom imports, but also for Ikaruga, Guilty Gear X and various others. As I said though, other games are fine.

I've been OK so far using my monitor, but I'm getting a bit fed up of it to tell the truth as I need my PC for other things! So if anyone knows what might be wrong, or how I could fix the TV display, I'd be very grateful.

I'm pretty sure this is the R422 mod fix, but that applies to ntsc consoles.

Do a search for trsoft and r422 that should bring up Tony Ross's web page and have a read on there.

Wow! To my astonishment and delight I have found a fix.

I downloaded from megagames.com the Utopia boot disk, and it boots the import fine. No display problems whatsoever.

Now I can play Ikaruga on a big screen

Thats just for running 50Hz on ntsc consoles without the screen rolling.

The problem seems to be the boot disk screwing things up.

I think even the utopia disk will run Ikaruga at 50Hz with borders.

Best option is the DC-X which will force the game to boot at 60Hz, or an ntsc Dreamcast.

I suppose, now that you mention it, there are borders with the Utopia disk.

Hadn't really noticed as Ikaruga isn't full screen anyway and I hadn't played it for a while, so couldn't remember what it was supposed to look like.

Yup, Cool Cool Toon is bordered and the music is out of synch with the gameplay. It's like a whole new play mode! Or not

You don't want to be playing Ikaruga in 50hz anyway, it's far slower. There are nasty effects too like the stage1 music finished waaaay before the boss encounter because of the speed difference. If you own the original copy of ikaruga already, the best thing to do is to get hold of the iso and patch it. It will then run at 60hz on a PAL machine. Not promoting piracy, but this will save you any soldering, mods etc and as long as you have paid for the original, your concience is clear.
