    Transferring DS Saves

Just picked up another DS and I'm wanting to transfer saves from my PC to actual DS carts. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for such a device.

Yes rule number one, dont use an action replay max they are ****. It's both unreliable & dosent work with every ds game as some save types are unsupported like pokemon diamond/pearl ect...

Try & get one of these. This is all you'll ever need works with every ds save type out there (so far)

Simply plug your card into it, plug it into your pc & then use the installed program that comes with the adaptor to either extract or restore your save, thats it.

Just noticed you mentioned you have saves on your pc, if they are from a flash card & are in the .sav format then they will work using the adapter as well.

No probs, i found mine on ebay, just had a look couldnt find any on there at the moment. The link i gave you is from the actual makers website.

Such a cool device it's a shame loads of places dont sell it, they all stick to the inferior AR max.

If you have trouble finding that many Slot 2 flash cards would work with the right homebrew software, however I forget what it's called offhand.

Can't manage to find the EMS one you linked to at the minute, I have found this one though which looks the same, maybe it's just rebranded

There was a UK based ebay seller with the NDS Adaptor for about a tenner, but it doesn't look like there are any up at the moment.

The NDS Adaptor doesn't work with 8MB save files at the moment, or at least the software doesn't (the hardware itself can manage it). I also had trouble getting the driver installed on my desktop, I think it needed more power from the USB port, and I would need a powered USB hub to get it to work.

Yeah that looks identical, probably a Japanese boxed/branded version of the EMS device (Gametech re-sell Datel stuff as well in Japan).

I've used the Action Replay Max which was ok but doesn't work with larger save sizes either, and the NDS Adaptor is quite nice if you get the drivers installed, but a cheap Slot 2 device is probably the most flexible solution.

Rudolph's NDS Backup v0.31 on a Slot 2 device, something like a Supercard Lite, on a DS with flashed firmware is the easiest way to do it. There is a patch out there for NDS Backup to handle 8MB game saves too. A Slot 2 card is also the most expensive solution

It wasnt band bros dx by any chance that you tested it with?? I had problems with that game but i thought it was because the save is encrypted.

Finally mananged to find the EMS one on ebay searched for the word "Save" under DS Accessories. Thanks for your help lads on this, I may have to pick up a slot 2 device soon if I have any trouble with this. Just out of interest is there a list of games out that that have an 8MB save or does anyone care to name a few.

So far the only one i know of that uses the 8meg save is band bros dx, the adaptor recognises it as a 8meg save format when you put it in, but backing up & restoring wont work, nintendo did something to the save encryption for that game.

If the 8meg saves werent supported at all when you plug a cart in you get unknown where it says cart volume.

Obviously till i find another 8meg saving game i wont 100% know for sure.

There is a tool called BDX Adaptor by Yasu which works directly with the real cart's 8MB save using an NDS Adaptor. It's a custom song slot editor only, it doesn't let you backup the whole save file (deliberately I think - to prevent people distributing the licensed downloadable songs). So the NDS Adaptor hardware can access 8MB saves, the problem is that the supplied save backup tool doesn't work with them.

The 'safest' way of getting custom songs into a real BBDX cart is with two DS's, one with your real cart and one running a copy and a hacked game save. Then transfer the songs in-game.

Or... you can copy the game save using bdxsave or a patched NDS Backup on a slot 2 device. Then edit it on PC, and copy it back.

I don't think the problem with 8MB saves is related to encryption, just that the NDS Adaptor software and an unpatched NDS Backup don't exactly know what to do with it. The licensed song downloads are digitally signed, and Nintendo tracks your download quota server side, so there is no getting around that.

Like i said though im pretty sure its a problem with band bros dx & not all 8meg save games as if the usb adapter software wasnt compatable it wouldn't detect it as a 8meg save type at all, it would just say unknown.

Im hoping i come across another game that uses the 8meg save type so i can test my theory out.

That doesn't mean much. Perhaps larger saves are mapped to a different region, and the NDS Adaptor doesn't know where. It could be anything. It may be that BBDX does something else unique, or that if another game turns up with a 8MB save it stores it completely differently.

The NDS Backup tool does something similar to the NDS Adaptor software, it detects 8MB but can't extract/write it. The patch to fix this is tiny (about 16 bytes), so it can't have anything to do with encryption. BBDX Adaptor also works as-is with the stock NDS Adaptor driver, meaning nothing significant is different about BBDX.
