Xbox Live gamertag recovery / save issue

Couldn't think of anything that'd come up via search via this, and hoping someone can help me.

Got an Xbox a few weeks back, didn't have internet connection at home at the time, so signed up for Live on a computer. Used the same gamertag as an offline profile on the machine at home, been happily playing away at games and built up some saves (notably 10 hours on Vesperia) that I don't really want to do again.

Finally got it connected today, and went to 'account recovery' as I thought would work fine. Tells me I'm going to lose achievements that I did whilst offline - bit of a bastard, but ok. According to the FAQ it should at this point prompt me to overwrite the existing gamertag? Anyway, it doesn't, and creates a seperate tag on the console with the same name, meaning if I want to use Live I have to start all the games from scratch.

Had a look to see if there's an option to cancel your account but only a US-based number, was thinking if I could do that could just get rid of it and then sign up from scratch with the offline tag with saves etc on the box?

Will this work? Is there a better way of doing it? Have accepted the loss of the achievements already, but would rather keep the same gamertag, just bring it online and with the same saves.

    ARGHH, help please

I'm feeling too ill right now to do an extensive search. I think it might be possible to "link" your offline profile with an Xbox.com gamertag. Try searching with google/forum for "link", "offline", "profile".

Got to the part where it wants 800 points to change the name of the XBL-registered tag...

Going to try and ring them tomorrow, unless any other ideas?
