Buying and playing the Quake games

I haven't played Quake or Quake 2 since back in the day and never even played them properly (only played the Saturn version of Quake and the N64 version of Quake 2). So I was thinking of buying them and playing them.

But here's my question - you know the way you can buy Doom and then take the level files and play them on, like, PSP Doom or a PocketPC version of Doom, well, can you do similar with Quake if you buy them legitly online, like via Steam or whatever?

You can yes. I've got the original Quake CD and you take the files from that to run on a mac version or similar.

For a test try the files from the shareware version.

Just as an update on this, trying through Steam, I can't seem to find the relevent files. They seem to be buried or else I'm not looking in the right place. I suspect Steam organises things very differently to disk versions.

Yep, sorry, the shareware one works perfectly fine (tried it on PSP and works great) but buying the full games seem limited to Steam or tracking down old disk collections. Even the ID site seems to list almost all of the older games as out of stock. But, yes, the shareware one works - I just pulled the .pak file out, replaced it in the PSP version and all worked well.

Edit: Actually, I've found the equivalent from a Steam version so it seems that will work. I'll buy one of their full games and see if I can get it working.
