Sega Mega Jet Super-duper Controller Mod (semi-question)

    Hey all,

I got a Mega Jet last week, turns out to be American (although the box and instructions are in Japanese). A minor setback, as the region mod for it is extremely easy to do.

But anyway, while I've got it open, I've been wondering about the controller on the front. Let's be honest, noone in their right mind wants to play Streets of Rage 2 holding THAT thing!

So I'm looking at the controller port at the bottom - Control 2, it says - and thinking, 'Why not swap the controllers over so I can use my regular MD 6-button pad as Player 1?

So that's what I'm attempting. Just thought I'd make a thread in case there are others on here who'd know about this and can offer advice, or are simply interested in it. Is it possible?

According to this page on gamesx.com, the region mod is invoked by holding the Mode button on bootup, and the chip you solder to is identical to the one in my 6-button pad, and also all the dpad directions and buttons from the front of the Mega Jet are linked to this chip.

It seems the built-in controller is basically just the regular pad circuitry hard-wired into the rest of the system without any fancy stuff going on (remember, this is Sega we're talking about here, the guys who designed the Saturn motherboards!) so it should be a simple case of cutting the nine output traces from this controller chip and wiring these to the external P2 port on the bottom of the console.

Or maybe, if I was feeling particularly adventurous (and here's the main reason for this thread, so hopefully I'll get replies from the likes of chaoticjelly et al, who know this kinda stuff. You geniuses, you), I could figure out a way to swap the two around, making the external port P1 and the built-in controller P2. Hopefully this would simply involve swapping the ground wires?.

An alternative (or rather, future project) could have me somehow shoehorning in an extra 9-pin socket for a second controller, thus making this a properly-portable Megadrive that wouldn't feel more than a little bit duff to use!

Right now I have no scart lead for it (it needs an MD2 one) so I'm looking for one of those. Some of my mates used to have MD2s but they're all dwelling in attics I bet

Quick update, I've been beavering away at it with the multimeter (waiting for my mate to get back from some flipping Anime cosplay convention thing so I can nab his MD2 scart lead) and have found the useful pins that will need swapping:

I'm currently deciding where to cut traces so that if it buggers up I can reverse the process without buggering it up any further

Seems the 5v and gnd pins are shared so there's no need to cut those, so I only have to worry about the other seven pins...
