connecting my 360 to my router?

    I'm in a bit of a predicament.

A freind of mine set up our router, connecting my main PC to the router by a wire. And my Laptop to the router wirelessly. With my PS3 and old 360 they were set up wirelessly aswell by him from his house, he must be using remote access to do it from miles away... (He is a bit of a freak and seems to want to have access to my stuff)

Anyway, my problem is that I now have a new 360 as the old one broke (unsuprisingly) so Microsoft gave me a brand new unit, but I still have my old official wireless adapter but it can't connect anymore. So I guess it was my old 360 itself that was assigned ports or a channel whatever it uses not the adapter.

So I need to connect my new 360 to my network, and my mate seems to have locked the network down or something as I can't find a way to see that a new device (my 360) is trying to connect to it, thus not allowing me to unblock it. He's set up something that is really awkward, as ages ago I used to just be able to connect things easily, but now he's made it complex.

I can't contact him as he's away for a few months, so does anyone know how I can connect my new 360 again in the simplest way possible? (As I'm useless with these things)

    many thanks,
    Malcolm.

EDIT: Would the 'Wireless Network Setup' work, where I use a USB device to connect my 360?

I think Malc you may need to get into your router, by the ip address, which will probably be 192.168.0.1.

    What brand/model is it?

In there you should be able to get all your security settings, to input into the 360.

Any of that make any sense? Are you in front of it now?

      thanks for the reply!

It's says Netgear on the router, not sure how I find the model.

I also don't know how to access the router on my PC.

Righto, open up a new window in Exporer or whatever browser you use, enter the ip address if you have it, probably on the underneath of the router. (192.168.0.1?)

You should get a pop down menu appear?

        What does this say?

It says I have to enter a username and password to conect to the IP adress.

I've entered admin and password as the username and password, but it doesn't seem to accept that; the pop up box just flickers and resets my password entry. I bet my freind Gary changed that as well.

EDIT: I should be able to find the details for that later this evening as it looks like the default username and password has been changed. But, once i'm in, what do I do then? Port forwarding, port triggering or something else?

Thanks very much for your help Wavey.

Can anyone else explain as simply as possible what I do once i've gotten in to the router settings later this evening? Like a little step by step guide of what buttons to click and ports to open etc.

              I'd be extremely grateful.

Sorry Malc, was on the phone.

PM me when you get the details, and we'll go from there, just need to see the security he may have put on it.

ok, cheers. It may be later on this evening hopefully if I can find the paper with it written on amongst loads of other paperwork.

The best thing to do is stick a paperclip in the reset hole at the back of the Netgear, return it all to default settings & start again from scratch. This is bit of an inconvenience, however, and assumes you're capable of setting it all up again from scratch.

Shame on your "friend" for setting it up this way - he sounds like a frustrated little hitler.

                      That sums him up perfectly.

Anyway, I couldn't find that little note with the details it's written on, if I find it eventually i'll let you know so I can continue on opening up the ports.

But for now, it looks like i'll have to wait.

Can't you just plug an ethernet cable in and sort the wirless out later when your friend is back?
Or just reset your router as mentioned on the previous page. It isn't that difficult to set back up.

Right, I managed to get hold of my mate. Apparently he's opened it up for me to connect. However i'm having no luck connecting still. My 360 can see the network, but it aint connecting.

This is exactly how we used to connect my other consoles and laptops, but isn't working for this one. Is it something to do with my new 360 unit? As MS replaced it and gave me a new one, but my wireless adapter is what I used on my old Xbox 360...

Are you still unable to connect to the router configuration page on your computer/internet browser?

If you can log into that (sounds like you already have the correct IP address), at least then we would know exactly what settings are active on the router.

We need to know what encryption is active (if any) for a start.

Just to be clear, how far away is his house? Is he next door? i.e. is he connecting to your router wirelessly, or is he using "remote administration" to access it over the internet from wherever he is?

I'm assuming it's the later. If it was the former, I'd be worried unless you trust him not to use your connection for weird stuff.... Just thought I'd mention it, just in case like.
