I'm surprised the Orange Box is so small. And relieved as I don't have much room on my 20Gb HDD

Half-Life 2 has never been very big. Back when it first came out on the PC if you compressed and backed up the Steam files they would fit on a 700MB CD. Portal certainly won't be very big - same engine and not a huge number of assets - and the other stuff is basically expansion packs. They all use the same engine and the HL2 games share a lot of assets so that only has to be used once.

Good idea for a thread anyway. When this comes out officially I'll be taking advantage of my 120GB drive to install a few games. Mass Effect to see if it can speed up those loads and eliminate the texture pop-in and Fable because I'm told the installs fix the occasional bits of lag on the menus. Then it'll just be a case of installing whatever I'm playing at that time to get some quiet

No single disc game will be bigger than 6.8gig, so a 20gig drive should be ok for at least 2 installs.

This is a great idea! Rock Band is 5.6gb actually this maybe with my extra content, will check later. Dynasty Warriors Gundam is also 5.6 gb

I just had enough room for 2 what with my arcade games ( I took a few off that I never play & over 300mb of Rock Band songs ):P

I thought the biggest a dvd9 could be was around 8-9GB

That's a DVD size, but MS use a chunk for copy protection, and possibly other things. I'm sure the max size is 6.8gb from a slide I saw a while back. That list has a few games hitting 6.8 but nothing larger, so I think 6.8 is accurate.

/waits for the usual suspects to start moaning that I discussed technical issues in the forum

I haven't tried installing Crackdown myself yet but others have and it doesn't work: "Installation of this game isn't supported"

I wonder if they have the ability to update this functionality for titles that don't work?

It must be how the game accesses the data, some calls they can't emulate via the HDD. It's a pity, I'd assumed it would be an ISO with the HDD acting as a virtual DVD drive, but maybe MS went for another approach as that may have security issues. Of course it's always possible they did go the virtual drive route, and the game itself is doing naughty things that don't actually meet the MS tech spec.

Crackdown could have done with a HDD install to cut out the streaming noise. At least we now know MS have tested every game.
