    SPDIF/TOSLINK to Phono ???

My new screen only has SPDIF/TOSLINK sound output. My stereo amplifier only has phono inputs.

Will this device do the job? ( I haven't got a clue about digital audio )

The UK's No. 1 electronics specialist. Free UK delivery on orders over £35. Explore our extensive selection of tech essentials including batteries, cables, PC & mobile accessories, cameras, audio equipment, electricals, and storage furniture. Visit us today!

I simply want to take the SPDIF/TOSLINK sound from my screen - and connect it to my phono stereo amp.

Thanks in advance for any help.

nope, that'll only convert toslink optical to digital coax, you need something that'll convert to analogue phono.

I will have to investigate further. Thanks for letting me know.

You will need a DAC for this. Assuming you only want stereo then you should be able to pick one up for less than ?100, although you'd need to ensure that your TV can be set to output PCM only (DDL/DTS signals will be seen as invalid input).

I want to buy a new amp - but can't find a stereo one with Toslink Optical input. It seems like only 5.1 receivers have them.

Something like this would do you, it'd convert the optical digital signal into analogue phono, a digital to analog converter (DAC)

I'm sure you could get one cheaper on ebay if you looked around though.

Thanks - that could be an option. I was looking at an Onkyo home cinema system - which has two Toslink inputs. It's 2.1 - but has a new virtual 5.1 option, which is said to be good. Plus.. it has HDMI etc...

Now that I've noticed the analogue speaker outputs - I might use them instead. Would be cheaper.

You'd get better sound out of the optical going to an amp I think, I'm sure I've seen budget DAC's for around 30/40 pounds, they would do the job really. Or I guess you could go for a cheap home cinema amp.
