I've got a January 2006 Premium and the fans have always been noticeable and the DVD drive very noisy but since getting the in the NXE Preview on day one and playing games off the hard drive the fans have become the new DVD drive!

Mine actually sounds like a mixture of those two sound clips. It starts off quiet and then does the whine as it gets more and more taxed by whatever it's doing (although it doesn't seem as pronounced as in the howling clip).

What's worrying is that even when it's on a par with the smooth clip I still find it obtrusive. I can hear the system right now as I'm typing this and it's idle on the dash - the only problem being it's audible over the grinding fans of my PC and GFX-card blower, all of which have been slowly dying for ages

Guess there's no cure for this on the system side of things. Only other avenue is chucking it in an enclosed AV unit or something. Which will cause havoc with my setup

looks like you can identify them without cracking the case open. There are also fans made by Sunon which aren't as bad as the Deltas but not quite as pleasant as the Nidecs.

Wow, Nidecs are definitely the way to go.

I could tell from the sound on that video that my current one is fitted with the Brushless fans before even having a quick look at the back of the unit to confirm with the white stickers.

I wonder if the new 60GB pack has the Nidec's in? I'd be willing to be it's still a total lottery as to what you get though.

Yeah it will depend on the factory and what is in-stock I guess.

Your right Pete, there isn't one. I have a spare set of Nidecs if anyone wants to open their console.

                They are much much quieter.

I fiited the talismoon 3rd party fans to my 360 as it is out of warranty and they are much better than the standard ones. coupled with HD installations its almost like the equivelant of getting a new console.

So if there's isn't a fan at the front, what am I hearing?

That's definitely where the noise is coming from. That spot seems to get rather hot too.

As it's horizontal, the dvd drive is where it is, obviously. Under it, which is half the problem, is the gpu and it's flat short heatsink. That red marker pinpoints it exactly.

                        Is yours upright like that?

No, I lay mine horizontal. It must be the GPU heatsink then as the whole reason this started as a bit of an issue for me was the NXE hard drive installs meaning the DVD drive didn't mask the noise any more.

Hmm, not sure it would be that, as they make no noise.

Strange. Maybe it's just a weird acoustic thing, your hearing the fans (at the back) more, but they sound like they are coming from there.

The heat is most likely one of the lower ram chips. Those things get seriously hot and on some revisions have a thermal pad stuck between them and the inner metal case which creates a nice little hotspot on the outer plastic case.

Its one of the reasons I advocate raising the console up a bit just to get some airflow underneath it when its horizontal.
