They do seem to have made other mistakes in 360/PS3 comparisons over time such as switching full RGB on when using screens that aren't compatible and vice versa which would produce either not enough brightness or too much contrast depending on which way they did it.
The choice is nice and simple for me as I've only got the PS3 now but when I did have both it was more often than not the PS3 versions for a few reasons. The lack of HDMI on the earlier 360s was annoying after I'd got used to the richer colours possible via HDMI. It wasn't always obvious going from console to console but a quick switch of leads when playing something like Gears on the 360 later on made it quite obvious just how much better it could be.
I absolutely hated the noise of the 360 and the seemingly standard answer of "I can't hear it as I like to play my games at really loudly" just didn't cut it for me.
My 360s seem to be on three week trips to Germany and back to be repaired/replaced/ridiculed for me to consider it worth buying games for when it was available on the PS3.
I prefer the Sony pad in general. The 360 pad feels like it was designed specifically around 1st person to me and it was leagues above the DS3 on them but it just felt uncomfortable to hold and the sticks being symmetrically placed just worked a lot better for me.
I don't do it so much now but I used to import a lot more games and that generally meant that the PS3 was the way to go for me.
I think if people are big online gamers then I think Live must be a big decider on the 360 side but I don't bother with it as much as I used to. It seems that most of my mates that I used to play online with on the 360 have moved over to the PS3 like I did partly due to going through a few replacements so if online was a big thing for me I'd be better off with the PS3 rather than the 360 now anyway.
I'd rather not have missed out on exclusives like Fable 2 & GoW 2 but I really don't feel the need to have another console now as the consoles I have do everything that I need them to do. Maybe if they finally manage to sort out all hardware problems & noise then maybe I'd be tempted to buy a 360 as 2nd console for the couple of games that are exclusive on the 360 that I'd like to play but until that happens I've just got any interest in them
I know it'll probably not happen for a very long time, if ever but I'd really like for the often talked about one console future which I could play all the games on.

The Xbox 360 games combined with the PS3 hardware would be heaven .
Sony's (aka Kutaragi's) dream of destroying MS - which really, was little more than a dream, is dead. Sony have hardware reliability in the bag, perhaps they could get a hand on putting together some of the tech pieces from the GPU guys, but still. They have very stylish interfaces and some cool bits and bobs (earth visualiser).
MS have better software dev, but worse astetics and SIGNIFICANTLY worse hardware reliability.
So basically, cross design of hardware with Sony handling the new tech line but with MS/external help on improving how it's used/it's effect on gaming, sony take astetics, MS take functionality + dev kits + software dev. Sony and MS merge their in house development. 3rd parties have one target platform (+ the wii), no one has to money hat anyone (... if we ignore Nintendo)
We are at the point where MS are paddling in red ink to stop a Sony assault on the home PC that is simply not going to happen, and we have Sony slitting it's own throat on a business model that was destined to fall apart once a cycle failed. Just get over it, jump into bed, and create the Playstation X for next gen. All titles under one roof.

Quite an interesting thread here.
I, myself don't actually own either yet as I've just been leeching off my flatmates' ones..
But I am eventually getting myself both as I couldn't live with not being able to play the "other" consoles exclusive titles. But for now I'm kinda leaning towards the ps3 as Im not big on fps or online play. More of a fighter/racer fan here.
I also like the fact that you can plug any old usb pad into the ps3 and it will accept it(Perfect for sfIV and ST HD remix)
Now i've noticed that nobody has mentioned the 1080p vs 720p issue here.
The 360 is getting all its releases with full 1080p support whereas the ps3 is still gettint quite alot of 720p only titles. Dead space, mirror's edge and lbp just to name a few. Does this not really impact on the visuals then?
People are saying that mirror's edge looks better on ps3, so is this the case even in 720p/1080i?
If so then the PS3 will probably be my first HD console purchase

The reality is that the PS3 has marginally more games that support 1080p (WipEout HD, Ridge Racer 7 etc), but approx. 720p will continue to be the standard. I say 'approx' because many 360/PS3 games aren't even 720p natively.

So basically if a ps3 game says 1080p on the back then this is the native res of the game?

95% of the time, yeah. There are a few that have 1080p on the back but actually upscale (VF5 for instance), but this is more because of the intital uproar about the PS3 being unable to hardware upscale, meaning TV's that are unable to display 720p (i.e CRT HDTVs common in the US) were unable to display them in HD. It's not so much about deceit like with 360 covers.
The PS3's lack of ability to hardware upscale (at least vertically) means that games are generally displayed in their actual resolution unless the develop has made an effort to include 1080p upscaled mode.

There's no real need because any FullHD TV will display it fine. It's only an issue on old 1080i-only CRT HDTV's which only really exist in America.
There's nothing hugely special about being able to upscale on the console itself, because if your TV has the better scaler than you're better off letting the TV do it anyway.
