Crackling noise seemingly from 360 on right channel

Optical out into surround amp and floorstanders from 360.

Was watching a film last night streamed from the PC and the right speaker started making a very distrubing crackling noise. i.e. the noise you get with dry solder joints or dodgy potentiometers. I stopped the film but the dash continued making the noise.

Thinking either amp or speaker were screwed, I swapped out the speaker first but it still made the noise. Then I tried changing to a different source and it stopped.....

Anyone had this from their 360 before? Sounds pretty terminal to me. Only thing left to check is another source via the same optical input in case that bit of the amp is screwed.

I had this when I first got my Xbox three years back. It sounded like occasional crackling, like some of the sound samples in the games I was playing were dodgy - namely ones that would read from the HDD, like Hexic and other arcade stuff.

It sorted itself out after a few weeks. I did the same thing Charles, changed the speaker, cable, used the PS2 etc... It was deffo the 360.

I remember bringing this up over live and a few people had the same problem but a firmware update eventually sorted it iirc.

I had this recently, although in my case it turned out not to be the 360 as I disconnected the HDMI on the console and could still hear the noise.

Whilst I couldn't get the squeezebox media player to make the same noise using the same optical cable and amp input, my xbmc started making the same noise tonight via a different input and cable. Looks like it's the amp that's borked. Rather more expensive than a new 360.... gah.

        Thanks for the responses guys.
