Was a boot disk ever released for PS2 (front loader)?

    Hello All,

I' m a new member. I am finding the following guide very useful: http://www.ntsc-uk.com/tech.php?tech...yImportedGames ; however, I get the impression it was written/uploaded some time ago and just wondered if any boot disk was developed since which doesn't require the PS2 to be re-cased and, if so, is it more succesful running Jap s/w on a U.K. console, or vice-versa?

Many thanks in advance for any help received,

    Stuart.

    Welcome.

As far as I know, there is still no standalone boot disc option. You are definitely best off with an infinity chip or similar.

      Thank You.

I apologise if the following is a FAQ; but having learned that PS1/2 games are region-locked on a BC Jap/U.S. PS3, is there any update on that situation, ie. has a way around it since been found?

      Thanks again.

I think the PS3 is pretty much locked down at the moment. In fact the ps3 scene seems pretty dead, possibly in part because it's region free for ps3 games and you can install linux on it.

From elsewhere so I don't know how valid it is:
"IBM spent a lot of time designing this one and they put the ps3 encryption Keys inside the cell processor so there really is no way to ever hack this without knowing the key. Even if you get a Cell CPU PCI board (mercury computers makes one) and build a replica PS3 you still don't have the keys"

You'd need a test PS3 for multi region gaming. There is a solution for PS2 front loaders, but it requires modding the drive tray.
            Kept you waiting, huh?

Any idea where I could get further info on this?

              Cheers.

^The boot disc is called Swap Magic for PS2 games, and Breaker Pro for PS1 games.

But it's quite a pain, and you sometimes need to swap in an extra downloaded 'boot disc' called CD Loader to get some games working. Better to get it modded properly.

Network adaptor, Hard disk and Free MC Boot

Don't bother with Swap Magic unless you're going to do the case mod, because it ruins the fat PS2 tray pretty quickly, unless you're very careful each time.

                      Ditto last post.

Similar to the GameCube/Phantasy Star trick perhaps?

Sounds like this could be the way forward.

I really should try the new ps2 exploit method but the old independence exploit works way too well, although I hear on the new one you don't need to bootstrap off a ps1 disc anymore and my drive hardly loads any discs at all anymore. I'll have to do it eventually.

Even easier. You have a specially prepared mem card with a few select apps installed, boot your PS2 without a disk in the drive and the list of apps are selectable from the PS2s own menu.
For apps read HD loader so with a network adaptor and HD you can load all your games without the disk. As the laser in invariably the first thing to go this has been a lifesaver for me. Your PS2 also doesn't need to be modified in any way and games run from HD ignore the region coding.
If you need help with the card just PM.

                            Thank You very much.

To be honest, I am actually still at the stage of weighing up the pros and cons of the different hardware on which I could run PS1/2 titles, having not had much to do with Sony h/w prior to now. It sounds as though this could make things a lot simpler though.

Is it safe to assume that PS1 games of whatever region could also be run from HD?

If any dis/advantages of using specifically either the U.K. or Jap console as the basis of this set-up occur to anybody, please do post them below.

Likewise, if anyone can comment on the chances of running PS1/2 s/w from HD on any version of PS3 from another region, please.

Not as a result of running games this way, I trust?!

PS1 games can't be installed to the HD unfortunately.

PS3 regarding ps2 software is still region locked to whatever the ps3 is.

store downloaded ps1 games work on all regions as long as you are not running in standard definition (who does on a ps3 anyway but you'd be surprised I guess), this is because the NTSC PS3's don't support 576i, and the PAL PS3 doesn't support 480i.

I really could do with looking into free MC boot more, as I think it'd be easy enough to install considering my launchelf configuration already, the only thing stopping me is the config file, I don't want several hundred items on it, only one for the upload server and hd loader really.
