Rock Band, Guitar Hero Recommendations...

Being a Guitar Hero virgin I'm wondering where's the best place to start, with regard to version/package for the 360?
I was going to pick up GH3 with Guitar from HMV in the sale, but noticed for about a tenner more can get the newer World Tour version with guitar. Then after looking around wondered if it's better just to plump for the whole Rock Band pack.
I fancy banging on some drums again (used to play), but not adverse to a bit of fret tingling either. Regarding tracks I'd rather play to old rock, grunge or other stuff such as the Beastie Boys or a bit of Jacko - both of which I know are on the World Tour version.
Have read a few reviews of World Tour but they only seem to mention the updates and comment on the problem with some of the innovations, but obviously as someone who is new to the series I have no idea what to expect anyhow.
Wondered if someone might suggest what's the best version to go for with regard to instruments, track listing, operating as a whole package etc.

The best option is to try them both out and see what suits you. Everyone seems to have different opinions on this, so you really are the best judge. Whatever you do plump for (whether it be guitar hero pack or rock band 2 pack), be sure to pick up the other one from which you buy solus, as it's an instant pack of 80 tracks!

Also make sure you get the second rock band, then just get a shot of the first one, pay 400 microsoft points and then you can import them over and get another 40ish tunes!

I think the general consensus is that Rockband is the better game due to the notecharts and dlc support amongst other things. I've played both and much prefer rockband, and I'm a musician, if that counts for anything!

I also perfer the rockband guitar, but I think that's just a personal thing.

If you get rockband 2, rent or borrow the 1st one so you can export the songs.

You get about 80 songs on the disc, but you cannot transfer songs between different guitar hero games.

You do however have a lot of downloadable content available. They have released a minimum of three songs a week, and while it doesn't have as much as Rock Band, it's only been available for a couple of months, so is actually doing pretty well, and is getting more downloadable support than the 2nd and 3rd titles.

Well Guitar Hero 3 is a bargainalicious £35 with a wireless guitar in HMV, so that is a good place to start.

I agree With Boris here, the GH3 guitar is worth it, plus when you get bored of GH3 just sell the disc on like I did, there are power ups and all kinds of terrible things which really kill the game for those just wanting to play.

If you are on 360 try picking up GH2 too as that had some real magic and is all about the music!

Finally Rock band for me too, there's so much more thought gone into it, Guitar Hero just feels a little soulless after the 2nd. This is just my humble opinion though

I'd recommend just getting a guitar for now though - wait for the Rockband 2 instruments to be released before getting the kit. Being gable to add the extra cymbals will make all the difference for a drummer.

Original artists.

Do Guitar hero and rock band use the original artists or is it a cover band doing the tracks?

The majority of tracks are now all Original Artists, there is a few which aint, even some DLC, there is a David Bowie track pack you can buy for Rock Band, and 2 of the 3 tracks are covers, and your like, WTF???????? I did buy Heroes : As made famous by David Bowie.
