I've only really had success with using .mp4 files on the PS3. These basically need to be h264 + AAC. I think you should be able to losslessly extract the audio & video from an mkv & whack them in an mp4 container, but I don't know how.

There are lots of PC & Mac apps for converting video to PS3-compatible format & for streaming it to it, but I mostly use Linux. I use undvd to convert and MediaTomb as media server.

It's the same for the 360. MP4 with h.264 is the 720p format of choice. Downside is that it's stereo (AAC) only because they don't want to fork out for the AC3 license. If I'm doing this, I use Dolby Pro Logic II (movie) which seems to work pretty well.

On the PC, I use a freeapp called handbrake to do the conversion. It will recognise pretty much any source format. It's a slow process though. It does overnight batch jobs.

To provide the media, I use TVersity. It's too much hassle getting media player to notice mp4 files.

TVersity will also notice genres in mp4 files which you can add using the PC version of MetaX, which makes browsing your vids a little easier.

Another vote for TVersity for streaming.

Use it with my 360 for my Anime needs & it's all kinds of awesome.
Media Centre hated anything I tried to run but with TVersity I'm yet to find anything it doesnt like...havent tried it with .MKV though so dont know how that will workout.

Ah yeah, TVersity will also transcode on the fly to stuff the 360 and PS3 understand, but I prefer to do the conversions so it doesn't have to. My PC won't handle real time HD conversions.

There are a couple of others apps to convert MKVs for 360 and I believe they will also work on PS3.
            GotSent and XenonMKV.
Download the registry patch on this post HERE
to allow MP11 to stream MP4 files.

been messing around with TVersity on my 360 and its actually not bad , so much better than wmp11 , ive also converted a mkv file to mp4 with xenonMKV and its playing fine on my 360 via TVersity , so might just stick with that option , works well thanks

Yep. I don't use the PS3 often for this, but when I do that's what I use. Have been ever since I heard of it ages ago.

I use Nullriver media link but it's broken. Just installed this on the Mac Mini. Wow. Works so much better. Nice find Capcom. Cheers.
