    PS2 optical out problem

    Hi,

I have a Jap V0 PS2 (yes an SCPH-10000), bout from someone here ages ago, which I had modded with a Ghost2 chip (the follow up to the messiah) and it works really well.

For the first time yesterday, I hooked up an optical cable and set the optical out option in System Configuration to on, but cannot get any sound out of my amp using the optical setting. This is just games, the SCPH-10000 won't play DVD's without some software on a memory card (which I don't have).

    A few questions:

Does the PS2 boot up sound play through the optical out on startup?
Does all game sound (pro-logic II or not) come through the optical or only certain titles?
Could fitting a modchip screw up the optical out (i.e when it was put back together could it have been left disconnected, or can some modchips break that stuff)?

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks.

Ok, googling a bit suggests that optical out for the PS2 is a waste of time anyway, since it's only some games cutscenes that produce 5.1 and the ones that do Dolby Pro Logic II obviously only need analogue stereo out a la the gamecube.

Worse still, some games don't output anything via the optical out!

I'll save my optical cable for my Xbox 360 (if it ever turns up).

Hmmm, I have used it for a while and any game I then played was via the optical I thought, might be wrong, as I had both connections enabled... Funny thing is, the sound via the optical was obviously 'faster' to the amp than the analogue sound was to the TV, which made me wonder which one was actually in synch with the visuals...

As said before Gunrock I can do you the DVD firmware of your choice if you can do me the McBoot thing. You send me a mem card, I send you one.

Games don't work with optical out BTW, at least none I've tried.

oh very wrong...the optical out produces a digital signal, opposed to analogue. You are missing out on much superior sound by using the old red and white pins to an amp.

Youre right, some games dont output a digital sound signal (mainly cave shooters). The solution - have both an analogue and digital hook up to your amp and switch accordingly

very few games (the wipeout fusion intro is the only one i can think off) produce 5.1 output, but that doesnt mean you shouldnt be using an optical lead!!

Whether you get better sound or not is debateable - I do cos of the way my amp works. The idea of sound quality is not the number of channels of sound!
You should get PS2 system sounds coming out through digital so the startup should be audible. Most of my games work through the optical and, afaicrc, PS1 games too.
Joe, do you get no game sound from the optical out?

Yeah, sorry I've been meaning to get on with that, but haven't had time. I'll try to get a look at it soon.

Joe has a SCPH-10000 too, so I'm beginning to wonder if they don't do optical out for games.

It is odd to hear that both of you are getting no audio via optical out on JPN launch consoles so it could be a design fault with that model. Certainly I've had all my PS2 consoles (various models dating back to PAL launch) hooked up via optical and only had no sound with 2 games which were Parappa the Rapper 2 and Initial D: Special Stage.

Someone's mentioned Cave shooters but I don't recall DDP: Dai-ou-jou or Espgaldua having this problem but that could be my faulty memory playing tricks.

I'll have to re-check as the last time I tried using optical out via PS2 was circa 2003. I know that the browser screen deffo worked via optical though.

Mushihimesama is the only Cave shooter that doesn't work with optical.

Actually, it was me. I didn't have the volume high enough! I had been using the same volume for the orignal Xboxa and that was plenty loud enough. Yes, the boot up sounds and "artic wind" effect noises on the menu screen do play through the optical out.
