360 VGA cable compatibility (hardware, not software)

Just a quick question; I was under the impression the XBox 360 official VGA cable basically worked with all monitors. Tried it on two LCDs, an old Dell 2100FP and a budget Asus widescreen model I can't remember the model of - no picture on both of them. The Dell goes into shutdown (orange power light) and the Asus complains there's no VGA signal at all. The cable's brand new out of the box, the monitors are both working fine, the 360 (an Elite) is putting out a picture... any suggestions? Other than taking it back to the shop?

<fanboy>It is... not a little frustrating that it takes a £200 paperweight to remind me how much I love my PS3.</fanboy>

EDIT: Although I'm starting to think it's the AV out. Jesus, what a way to get burnt buying second-hand. Regular video cable's not working now, whereas it works fine on another 360.

I had the same problem with a 360. It turned out that the previous owner had been using vga and had set it to a higher resolution (1920x1200) than my lcd supported (1280x720).

I was able to use the dash blind (just using audio for guidance) and drop the resolution to one that was supported. Might not be the problem but worth a shot. This was with the old dashboard though and not sure how easy the new one is to navigate.

Although if you are getting probs with the regular cable now too it's more likely the 360's av out is stuffed.

To reset the display settings of the Xbox 360 console to the default settings, follow these steps:
1. Remove any discs from the disc tray.
2. Turn the console off.
3. Turn the console on.

Note If you are using an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, turn the console on by using the Xbox Guide button on the controller.

Note Make sure that you use the player 1 controller when you do this. The player 1 controller is the controller where the upper-left quadrant light is on.
4. As the console starts, press and hold the Y button, and then pull the right trigger at the same time. This causes the Xbox Dashboard to reset the display settings to the default settings and then automatically restarts the console. So it's OK when the Xbox 360 console restarts.

If that doesn't work, its the beginning of an E74 error the machine has not recognised yet. I can fix it for you if you like.

To be honest i'd be surprised if it's not, as i have seen a lot of them recently.
