The lights on the wiimote will power up for about 5-7 seconds before turning off again, batteries are fresh so that's not a problem.

Tried the synch button inside the battery compartment, tried the synch button on the console next to the SD card slot, tried them both at the same time and nothing works - the wiimote just keeps turning itself off

Usually the wiimote only stays on when connected, so it could be that. Have you got bluetooth on your computer? You can link them to computers (try google) - that could establish if it was wii-related problem.

You haven't used charging stands have you? Those things can kill Wii remotes, although in this case probably not, since the lights at least come on briefly.
