    PS3 about to die?

I think my PS3 is on it's way out... 60GB HK machine, it's doing the disc error thing where it stops reading, freezing mid-game/film (making a rather nasty whrrr-clunk-whrr-clunk noise to boot!). Not fully terminal yet (it still boots up), but the thing tends to die about 20 minutes in. It did a weird thing in GTA4 where it only loaded half the textures and I ended up falling into a massive hole in the street...

As it's an older machine, the HK warranty expired a while back. Would it be worthwhile trying to chase up Sony UK for a replacement/repair, or maybe just wait until/IF prices drop and buy a replacement?

is it worth sticking a new hdd in to see if that helps?

Hmm, might give that a try if I can pick up a cheap hdd somewhere. Of course the thing with swapping out the hdd, I'd have to sort out all the DLC for things like Rockband and Singstar (I though there was some sort of things where the DLC was locked to a particular hdd?).

Then again, if I had another PS3 I'd have the same thing to sort out anyway! LOL

      Cheers!

Wavey Pavey in this thread is about to tackle a BR drive, don't know how far he's got with it yet,

Man, that replacement drive swap looks like a job and a half! My expertise with Playstation mods only goes as far as sticking blutac in my old PS1 to do the disc swap to play imports... That probably help bugger up the CD drive on that, though!

DLC is locked to the console mate. When my PS3 died they swapped it out and gave me PSN store credit for all the DLC I'd bought.

Ahh, balls to that plan then! I think I'll keep hold of my 60GB machine - it'll make for a nice/expensive mp3 player for my room! LOL

I dont think DLC is locked to a console, as I have owned 2 ps3's and re downloaded some content onto the second.

No, the DLC isn't locked to the console.

DLC is locked to your account and can be activated on up to 5 consoles at once

Cool. I thought there was something a bit like that but wasn't sure.

I had a look on the Sony forums and apparently it's possible to get Sony to reset your account (or something?) for things like Singstar downloads, which are locked to specific consoles.
