Cant decide on DS or PSP

Hey everyone, got a new job recently that involves working long hours, often during the night with a lot of time doing, well....nothing basically.

Im in need of something to keep me active and awake, Ive tried reading etc but that tends to have the opposite effect and relaxes you and before you know it...zzzZZZZZZ!!

Never dabbled in the Portable Gaming realm before so Im a noobie, Im sure this has been asked time and time again, but Im not that much of a noob to know its the games that make a system, not the system itself.

So, Ive been looking between the DS and the PSP (obviously) Im not a fan of 'Nintendo-Disney-Cutsey' games if you know what I mean, but love games that are simple, fun and fast. Kinda like Worms, Grand theft Auto etc... Games that you can literally pick up, have a blast and switch off.

Im also looking at the Emulation side of things, as far as I can find the PSP has good Emulator support on the net to play your old console games, like Earthworm Jim! Classic! Such a shame they cancelled the new one due to come out soom for the portable.

Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.

    Regards, M.

Ive got both, and though I like the ds, I have found myself generally playing quite a lot of my psp since I recently bought it, I have a few emus installed, and like its functionality, can listen to internet radio, surf web, watch a movie or play a game...really like the psp.

I've got a DS & to be honest I hardly ever play it.

Only game's I've got that I regularly play is Ketsui Death Label & Football Director but other than that it just sits gathering dust.

I'm currently on the lookout myself for a PSP for Emulator use so I'd say look there for gaming fun

      Have you considered the GP2X??
Does alot of what the PSP does but easier for Media playback I believe.

Buy whichever system has the most games you fancy. I've owned both and sold the PSP as I felt it's not really portable and lacking in decent games designed to be played on the move. I do still like the DS and despite all the drivel on the DS there is still plenty of good games on the system. It's small, light, has an excellent battery life and pretty decent speakers.
Having said that even my DS is rather neglected these days since the App Store opened for the iDevices.

It all depends on what you want to play. For me, the DS' catalogue is plentiful and varied enough. There's literally something for everyone on that machine. And it has the battery life to go the distance.

The PSP has never really appealed to me at all. Most of the games tend to be scaled down versions of games that play better on "big" consoles (and the analogue nub is horrible).

However, given your stipulations, you're probably better off with the PSP.

DS for fun games, PSP for more serious games for me. Hope this helps

PSP-3000 is a serious bit of kit IMO. Way improved over the 1000.
              Kept you waiting, huh?

PSP has like 4 decent games until you mod it for emulation, at least DS has a good 30 or so before you get bored

Has to be DS really huge range of games and there are lots of games that'll make time whizz by (rpgs and phoenix wright series). PSP isn't getting a whole lot of love from western developers and the Japanese games aren't getting localised

You only say that because you can't see a good game when it's staring you in the face.

Ridge Racers 2 alone is better than the entire DS library. If you add in the PS3 connectivity you can't lose. Mobile SOTN>any DS Dracula for example.

                        I'd go for the DS.
While the PSP surely has some interesting games, the DS offer a different way to play that you won't get on any other console (not even on the Wii); PSP games, on the other hand are pretty similar to what you'll get on a home console, but with a bad d-pad and analog stick.

Thanks guys and gals, I ended up going for the PSP. After lots of pondering and comparing, what swayed it for me was the emulation side of things on the PSP. I know the same can be done on the DS with an R4 cartridge and memory card but, I picked up a slightly earlier model PSP Lite from Gamestation as the newer 2000 and 3000 models seem to be a right b*tch to put custom firmware on for all those homebrew games and emulators. Gona get myself an 8gig memory stick and fill it up!

Now to dig out all my old Atari ST games and PSX games

Anyone else here got a custom firmware PSP with emulators on?

Would have recommended the PSP too. Aside from emulation, it has some cracking games I have about 40 PSP titles and a lot are stellar games.

Heres a few to pick up if you can:

                            Ridge Racers 2
                            Goku Makaimura
                            Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror
                            Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow
God of War: Chains of Olympus
                            Valkyrie Profile
                            Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
                            Patapon
                            Patapon 2
                            LocoRoco
                            LocoRoco 2
                            Every Extend Extra
                            Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles
                            WipeOut Pure
                            Wipeout Pulse
                            Star Ocean
                            Disgaea
                            Tekken: Dark Resurrection
                            Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast
                            Monster Hunter
                            Final Fantasy Tactics

That's all I can think of at the mo.
