XBox Live voice chat question

I tend to turn chat off when I play online, as I don't like the headset & it's usually just people embarassing themselves with smack talk - however, I was playing Street Fighter Remix online t'other night & although I had chat switched off, I could still hear bits & pieces of what other people were saying coming through my speakers

Anything I can do about this (short of muting the sound entirely of course)?

there should be an option to on the dashboard settings or profile settings to direct chat sound. you may be able to turn it all off there. i know there is a volume slider in there somewhere for the chat bands when they are routed to speakers, you could just slide that right down, i pretty sure its in profile settings or preferences. guide button, one blade to the right.

In the privacy settings, there's an option to receive audio only from friends. Switching that on I think blocks voice chat coming through from all non-friends, as I did this by accident once in the past.
