    Backing up PS3

I'm currently backing up my 60 gig harddrive as I've bought a new 320 gig one.

I'm sure i've read somewhere that you have to keep hold of your id and password because it's not stored on the machine.

I'm following this thread here and it doesn't seem to make any note of this

I recently used backup/restore to copy over stuff from my old dead PS3 to my new replacement machine. When I did the restore, it copied over the old files and also all the old account details. I'd presume it's the same when you restore to a new HDD.

ID and password are both stored on the PS3's internal memory.

okay it's backing up now. Amazingly though I started off with a 320 gig drive, but only have 269 available, so god knows where the rest has disappeared to...

          a) it's not actually 320GB
          b) Your current PS3 drive is also not the quoted size - it's much larger. The PS3 system software takes up a fair amount of a hard drive.

Bit confused. Just got a 500GB HDD. How do I copy everything over from my current 320GB one?
            Kept you waiting, huh?

Sorry to hi jack yah thread but on a totally random note, i had to start deleting some of the game data on my 60 gig Jap PS3 - out of curiosity, if i keep teh save files and jus delete the game data, can i still keep my saves and jus install the game data the next time i play the game? If not then im screwed!

Yeah, you can just reinstall and the saves work fine - I just reinstalled Mirror's Edge and my backed up saves worked no prob

You need to back it up from the 320GB drive to an external disk, using the PS3's back up utility (I think that's on the far left side of the PS3's cross-menu). Then you install the new 500GB drive, the PS3 will recognise & format it and I think it'll ask you to do a system update (because some of the PS3's firmware is stored on the h/disk) and then you restore the data back to the new hard-drive.

You will need an extra external USB hard-drive of about 320gig in order to keep your data whilst performing the upgrade.

                  Stroller.

I recently upgraded my 40gb to 320gb and it went very smoothly.

The only thing that required any work was getting trophies back. You have to load every single game you have trophies for at least once (can just load it then quit). Then resync by going into 'Trophy Collection' in the game menu.

                      Bumpage.

What's the largest HDD that the PS3 will take?

I was under the impression that 320Gb was the maximum but if Joe has a 500Gb now has the maximum been upgraded?

I don't think that I'll need much more than 320Gb to be honest but it'd still be good to know.

                      Cheers.

500GB. I say that only because I don't think you can buy a higher capacity 2.5" HDD currently. The PS3 will recognise it though. I'm yet to do my swap over as I don't have a 320GB external disc to backup the 320GB inside the PS3 currently.
It seems that once you go for a high-cap HDD if you wanna go bigger it becomes expensive to do so. Lol.
I could backup all my saves using an SD card I guess, but that'd take ages. I've still got 88GB spare on the 320GB anyway so I'm alright for now.
                        Kept you waiting, huh?

is that including game data? because you could just delete that and install it again, if you have 88GB free you only need a 250GB drive to back it up to also.
