    XMB surround question

Ok so my samsung surround system has this little LED display to say what kind of mode its in, for example if i start Drakes Uncharted it says "DTS Digital Surround".

Anyway while im on the XMB it displays LPCM, regardless of what that means, my question is that if i start up an mp3 album on the xmb, am i not getting the full surround digital experience? as its not in dts mode or what not, there seems to be no way of changing this tho on the ps3 hmm

Anyhow 6am morning question due to no sleep, so pretty incoherent

mp3 is stereo, so unless you force it using Dolby Pro Logic II then stereo is what you'll get.

As Charles says, you won't be getting DTS for Mp3's because they're not DTS compressed, they're Mp3 compressed.

DTS and Dolby Digital are nothing more than compression formats just like Mp3. If Mp3's were outputting as DTS, that would mean they're being re-compressed, which is a bad thing. The PS3 is decompressing the Mp3's and outputting them as uncompressed LPCM, which is a good thing.

Surround Sound things like games and movies use compression formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS because there isn't enough bandwidth to output them as uncompressed.

If you're wanting stereo sources such as Mp3's to be 'upmixed' to use all speakers of your surround setup, it's the job of your reciever to use Pro Logic II upmixing.
