PS3 Problem

I turned on my PS3 this evening to be surprised that it wouldnt start!!!

The sony entertainment screen comes up but never gets past that screen and the big swirl across the screen stays there but doesnt go any further. doesnt even get to the select a profile screen! iv tried unplugging it etc but to no avail??
anybody had any similar problems or know how to fix such a porblem??

Tried the system reset i assume? When the system is off, hold down the power button for about 5 seconds, it'll boot and make a beep at which point you can let go. Worth a shot if you haven't tried it...
