    xbox 360 1 red light E 74 error

    Hi all,
spent a good hour searching round about this and wondering what I should do, I'm guessing returning it to microsoft for repair is the best bet any idea how much it would cost?

E74 is an AV cable error. Try unplugging and replugging the cable, then using another cable, and see if it clears up. If not your graphics chip is buggered. Repairs are in the region of £70-80 for non-warranty machines I think.

It probably is the graphics card then, it was showing up weird lines and what not on screen before it got the single red light.

It'll probably be easier if I just get a cheap core console tbh

I know it might not 'ethically' be right, but couldnt you force the RROD by overheating the console? (Cover vents etc) This is assuming your console is still within 3 years of purchase.

I had the same error last June and fixed it by replacing the X-Clamps. Not a difficult job if you have experience building PC's, I'm no expert but got the job done.

I'm sure Nick Pavey will be along soon to give you more info, I think he'll fix it if you want and make some good improvements to prevent it happening again.

I had a friend who had to return a faulty 360 and had lost his reciept aswell, but the console manufacture date printed on the consoles serial sticker proved that it couldnt possibly be more than three years old, or else it wouldnt have been assembled yet! So he was fine.

Perhaps take a look when your 360 was manufactured and if its less than three years ago just go through the repair process on the website (better than ringing up) and state 'intermitant RROD' or something similar?

Oh and if you bought it on a credit card im sure I have read that a statement showing the purchase is enough to act as a reciept.

Just tried to register my console (btw it says mfr date 2006-06-10) but it says iv already registered it (which I do remember doing) but it doesnt show up on my account and im 99% certain I didn't use a different windows live id.

The same thing happened to my January 2006 Premium last year, but thankfully I took the extended MS warranty and it was repaired quickly. It came back to me with a new mobo and has been fine ever since and it has never suffered three red lights.

Got the same problem 5 minutes ago on my elite. Not happy! So, this isn't covered by the warranty?

YES! Proper ring of death now. They'll definitely have to fix it *nods*

It's amazing what you can do in 2 and a half hours armed only with a faulty xbox and a towel.

Haha yeah it looks that way. In the end I gave up and gave Home a try for the first time.

Went back to the xbox, turned it on and off a few times (when it froze) and it eventually gave me the death rings. Got a coffin winging its way to me.

For a few months now, Xbox 360 users have been quietly venting about a "new" hardware fault with the console, where instead of displaying three red rings, machines would show an "E74" error.
