I'm meeting an electrician this week to discuss the wiring at my new place and was wondering, would it be a good idea to have him wire in some broadband access in different rooms so I don't have to rely on wireless. For example a couple of ethernet sockets under the TV in the living room for the consoles that runs through to two in the study I can connect to the router there. How do people do things like this these days? What do we need, standard cat5 shizzle?

You'd probably use CAT6, which is almost exactly the same as CAT5, but rated for higher performance (and which is recommended for gigabit).
If I were wiring a house I'd have the phone come into a cupboard somewhere (in the hall, under the stairs) and then have all the CAT6 sockets in the house return to there, too. That way you can put your router &/or a hub in there and everything is out of the way.
To be honest I probably wouldn't bother for just one or two network sockets - you'll probably just find yourself wanting to move the hub in a year or two, put your computer in a different room or move your Xbox to the other side of the living room.

just use youre power cables as a network with some of these http://www.ebuyer.com/product/106825. got 4 of these around the house, never had a problem and no extra wires.
