    PC not working

    A little help please

My PC has stopped working suddenly.

It seems to have started when i took the power cable out without turning the mains off. There wasnt any bang or anything?

Now every time i try to turn it on nothing happens?I opened it up and u can still see a green light on the motherboard but nothing is powering up? Its not a GPU prob as its only a few months old. Any help?

    My mobo is a ASUS A8N skt 939 PCI-E
    AMD athlon x2 3800
    XFX geforce 8800GT 512MB

Im wondering if its worth me taking it to be diagnosed? Its almost 4 yrs old and im thinking about getting a new one and selling this on ebay either whole or scavenged parts. But in order for me to do that i need to knw which part isnt working?

    thanks a lot

I'd personally try removing and re-seating the RAM, graphics card, and taking the CMOS battery out to see if the BIOS settings are scrambled, put it back in after 30mins or so out and see if it does anything then

or.. just remove the RAM or GFX card, and see if it makes any beepy noises

its a watch battery on the motherboard in a little holder, just prize it out with something flat and leave it out for an hour maybe.

(you might need to configure the BIOS when you put it back in, such as the date/time etc and maybe disk boot order, but nothing major).

I'd pull the gfx card or RAM first.

ok tried reseating GPU, RAM and removing CMOS bet. Nothing worked. In fact the light on the mobo that used to stay on, now goes out after 5s and a burning smell is coming from sumwhere? When i push the comps power on switch the mobo light does flicker? so it is registering the power on but just not coming on?!? any other ideas?

PSU has blown. Don't turn it on anymore, get a new PSU. Hopefully it's not taken anything else out with it.

yep, the psu is blown, likely a capacitor has gone if it's still providing some power. There's a possibility it could've taken out your motherboard too.

DO NOT OPEN UP THE PSU AND HAVE A LOOK

A capacitor is quite capable of throwing you across the room if it discharges into you. Even if it's been unplugged for a while. Unless you really know what you're doing, do not try to replace the capacitor yourself.
