US Nintendo Wii - Optimum Picture quality via component

    Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone can help me with the settings for a NTSC Wii connected via official component cable to a 40" Samsung LE40A656 LCD screen.

I am having a terrible time trying to get a decent picture quality from the Wii, in fact my Gamecube via component seemed crisper and more vibrant.

Is there anyone out there with a comparable or identical lcd with some settings or advice please?

    Cheers,

Just in case... You've set it to output 480p on the Wii yeah?

Yep this has been done, I am looking for the more finer points of calibration I think for the LCD...

Is it colours or clarity you are having issues with?

If the latter, I'd start by turning everything off and then moving the sharpness through the range. Once you've found a sharpness you like, then start turning any of the extra fancy features on and off until you get there.

It's 480p which is never going to look that great on an LCD. Just stand far enough away so that it isn't noticable

Thirded. Fact is that 480p really is pretty average and 40" is a blooming big screen. When I go from 360 games to Wii ones often the 1st thing that stikes me is q how average the pic quality is .

First things first: 480p CAN look good. But the 480p from the Wii is filtered to the extent that the effective resolution is probably somewhere closer to about 300-360p (depending on the game).

Like other people have said, it's a case of garbage in, garbage out. If you want, I wrote a quick setup guide (NOT a calibration guide) here which might help. By the sounds of it though, you're always going to be frustrated with what it looks like, so the advice on sitting further back is good.

Most Wii games don't output native 480p anyway, even when they claim to support it. Try playing Zelda: TP or Super Mario Galaxy and then putting a third-party game in, and right away you'll notice a massive difference in the size of the picture. Even those games don't fill the screen on my LCD.

The video signal is 480p so it's technically right, but yeah, they often don't render in the overscan area.

                      Wii

I have a USA Wii with a 42 inch Panasonic screen and I find 480i to be much sharper than 480p.
