Wii 'fuzzy' picture on certain games?

    Hi all,
Got a Wii through this morning and still have a component lead on the way so am having to use the crappy composite cables at the mo.
However, while I obviously don't intend to use these once I have recieved the component, I have noticed on certain games namely Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Lost Winds that there is almost interference lines in the picture. That is to say kind of fuzzy, rolling lines. When I run other titles such as World Of Goo or Punchout from the VC it's all fine. Also on the system menu, boot screen it's all fine - so is clearly something to do with those games?

It is a U.S machine running on a decent Sony LCD, I just wondered why these kind of 'interference' lines only appear on certain titles? Surely if it was interference it would appear all the time?

Like I sayI should have a component lead tomorrow and I'll check then just wondered if this will persist?

    Cheers

The composite output from the Wii is the best I've seen, on an NTSC-U one anyway. Some titles do have more 'smoothing' applied than others. You can normally see straight away on the safety warning sign which games are worse affected.

A lot of games have flicker filter enabled, and look noticably fuzzier and blurrier, though this may not be related.

It's just on SSBB really - there are actually sort of 'lines' of fuzz horizontally on the screen!? It's like interference rather than any sort of filter - it's not scanlines either

I thought SSBB was one (if not the only) Wii game were you can actually turn the 'flicker filter' off in the game settings, maybe try turning it on or off and see if either helps?

{EDIT} In fact a google search on this matter returns me to these very forums, and a quote from Lyris from here:-

Which leads me to believe that SSBB is the only Wii game with the flicker filter turned off by default making it the most likely reason you are experiencing issues, so I would try turning the flicker filter on and see if that helps (Pretty sure it will)

The strange thing is if the 'blurring' looks like what I think it does (Sort of a 'jittery image' that moves up and down one scan line all the time, might cause a blur effect on an LCD TV) I can replicate the same thing on my CRT TV using my Xbox by also disabling the flicker filter. However from what I understand since you are using an LCD TV in theory you should not be getting the problem at all? A bit strange that...

Oh, and once you get your Component cables you might want to try turning the flicker filter off again and seeing if it looks better - it might just be that your TV doesnt like the flicker filter disabled when using the Composite inputs.

Cheers mate, to be honest I never run anything through the scart or composite inputs on my TV so it could be I'm just not used to it.
I'll give the components a go when they arrive. Cheers for the heads up on the Flicker Filter. Yeah I remember using 'FlickF*ckr' on the xbox! Thanks

If it is a few lines rolling across the screen that could indicate some kind of ground loop or interference from another device; don't know why that would show up only on certain games though.

Probably best to wait on the component before investigating further as a badly shielded cable needs ruled out anyway.

Are you using an official psu and not some cheap clone as they have been known to cause interference.

Yeah using an official u.k psu on my u.s machine. Strangely after installling it to my hard disc with Coverflow loader the problem has now stopped?!
When it runs from the HDD all appears well?

Not positive but I think the USB launcher also forces the Wii Menu's default video mode for all launched games, this is to help prevent the RGB Scart/S-Video incompatibilty problems when playing import games. It could be that at the same time its also forcing the flicker filter to 'on' aswell.

It should be really simple to test if the flicker filter is the cause or not, simply load up the disk of SSBB and then in the options screen change the flicker filter option to 'on' (or off if its already on) and see if it makes a difference. You dont need the Component cables to do this, and its easy to change back

It's not the flicker filter mate, i've already fiddled with that

Would you believe I get the same issue using my Component cable on my US Wii

Like you said it's on SSMBB
But I've also had it happen in No More Heroes & Sonic/Mario at the Olympics

I'm using a UK PSU with my machine so it could be down to interference as someone else mentioned.
It's not constant & only happens sometimes so to be honest it doesnt bother me too much.
