    Toshiba HD-EP30 or EP35

    Afternoon chaps,

I'm in the market to replace my DVD player & HD-Drive for the 360 with a proper dedicated HD player now.
Basically my current Tevion Upsacling DVD player is giving up the ghost (Doesnt read discs properly, freezes) & the Toshiba HD-DVD's can be had for peanuts so I thought why not get the best of both worlds

But I'm not sure which one I should get.
I need to be able to make them Multi Region for SD Playback but aside from that either I think will be fine.

So what I'm wondering is has anyone got one or know's of any pro's & con's to each machine??

    Ta muchly

i thinka think they are the same machine with regards to features and picture, but the EP35 had a the far superior audio output

I'm not sure if a patch to make them multi-region was ever released for standard dvd's

      Thanks Buster

Hmmm not sure how the improved sound will be any better for me as my amp only does Dolby Digital or 6.1 over Coaxial or Toslink so I expect to get the true HD sound I'd need HDMI wouldnt I??

I know of a firmware fix for the EP30 that makes Standard Def multi region but wasnt sure on the 35.

Think it's time to start looking for an EP30

      Thanks again

      Neil

i wish i could help with this one, HDMI would be the best bet if you think your amp wouldn't take it

but i thought True HD was encoded on this discs, in the same way DTS was encoded on specific older DVD's

the reason why some of the USA HD-dvd's are worth a little more than the UK counterparts

          Thats cool buster no worries.

Been reading up & it appears the EP30 cannot output True HD anyway...doesnt have the hardware so it will be basic Dolby Digital which is fine by me anyway.

My amp doesnt have HDMI inputs anyway so my best it can manage is DTS/DD

The search is on though as I cant find any new anymore & they dont come up that often on AV Forums it seems

Still shall get a wanted thread going for one there anyway.

There does seem to be some region free firmware for the EP35 if you google for it - not tried it myself as I don't have a machine though.

Neil - what amp do you have? If it has analogue inputs you could use the analogue outs on the EP35 to get HD sound (TrueHD & DD+) if you were so inclined.

              Oooh didnt know that.

I have a Yamaha RXV357 Amp...it's nothing special but it does me fine in the confies of the flat
How does that work for TrueHD & DD+??
I assumed the Bandwith would be too great for Anologue inputs??

I only buy Yamaha amps man - love that Yammy sound

Basically you'd just hook up the player to your amp using 6 phono leads (one for the subwoofer remember), make the appropriate settings in the player menu & away you go - the EP35 would do the decoding of TrueHD or DD+ & pass it to your amp.

Of course, whether you think that's worth it or not is up to thee

This is actually my first ever Surround amp so to me it's been flawless

                  Oooh that sounds promising.
Although possibly a tad expensive having to fund 6 Phono leads
That said though isnt that basically just 3 pairs of RCA Leads or am I barking up the wrong tree totally there??

I think I may look into a 35 now but like the 30 they do seem rare as hens teeth at the moment

Thanks for the help has been mucho appreciated

I had heard the boot up could be quite long...but then I think some of the early Sony BD players have the same problem, could be it's something to do with the formats themselves that take a while to boot??

That said though my 360 Drive doesnt seem to suffer from long boot sequence

The EP30 can decode Dolby TrueHD and output it as Uncompressed PCM over HDMI to a suitable amp

There is a guy on AV forums can supply the firmware upgrade/patch. Something like Viking or whatever.

I done it and it work fine for HD EP30 (I think)
