Half-Life 2 on next generation Sony and Nintendo consoles

According to an interview with Doug Lombardi at http://www.vossey.com/:

"Vossey.com : Will Half-Life 2 be released on other platforms?

DL : Yes, notably on Xbox. The game will be available on Xbox but not until 2004. The partnership with Microsoft isn?t exclusive and we will also see this game on the next consoles by Sony and Nintendo."

So maybe HL2 will be in the starting line-up of both consoles. Nice.

Thats good news for the both of them but its a PC game all the way in my book and thats what i'll buy it for.

So the launch lineup will include a PC game that'll be about 18 months-2 years old?

Boring. Give me new games please, or updates to console games that I'd like. FPS games should stay on the PC IMO

I think that the many fans of Goldeneye and Halo (myself included) would disagree with you.

I do like Goldeneye and always have done. But I think it was always very over-rated, and it has aged terribly in just a few years.

I've only played a few levels of Halo though, but didn't really like it. Sorry.

My point (which I didn't make very well, I admit) was that HL2 is suited to a PC due to the superior controls and online play/patches/various mods etc. Playing the console version 2 years later will seem very watered-down in comparison IMO

I thought you made your point well...

Why do we want a 2 year old game (no matter how graphically and physically impressive) on new hardware, when we can have the mature title on the PC with lots of independant support by a great mod scene.

It doesn't make any sense! Half-life may be a great IP and it would probably sell well... but damn, if it's anything like the HL conversion to PS2 - stay away (imho).

what you both say is very true, the conversion will probably be like HL on PS2 and not worth even looking at. But...not everyone has a decent PC, or the know-how or inclination to sort HL2 out on their "yeah, I use it for Internet and sometimes Word" computers.

HL and undoubtedly HL2 are/will be huge IPs, two years down the line, word will have got to the masses about how good it is, just in time for the slick Sony marketing campaign to let them know how it's being released on the PS3.

It'll be snapped up by the masses, and will be a great system seller for Sony and Nintendo.

I suppose the funny thing is, coming out in a month, anyone who is serious about HL2 will get it on their PC (myself included), anyone who isn't that bothered (masses, casuals etc....) will ignore it until they can buy it for PS3. So who is going to buy it for Xbox? It'll sell, but I reckon those Xbox sales will probably be comparable to however many are sold on PS3. Maybe? Maybe not? Time will reveal all.

On another note, perhaps an indication of the direction Nintendo will be heading in with their next system.

It's certainly not a bad thing that it'll be released on further systems and will reach a wider audience but by the time the next series of consoles (bar the xbox of course) and the game itself are released, the focus will be well and truly off of the single player experience and people will hopefully be playing all of the excellent spin offs and mods on the PC.

Not to mention, by the time these consoles surface you'll probably be able to run a ?10 HL2 effortlessly on your bottom of the line PC World machine or pick it up on Xbox platinum range,

I do agree with what most people stated. HL 2 may be outdated by the time it?s released. Maybe no one cares about it any more at that time.

Still I don?t have and will never have a gaming PC. HL2 is virtually the only FPS that interests me. I don?t think that it?s gonna be a lousy port given the time Valve has to do it. Mods, etc. should not be impossible as well with the console manufacturers putting even more stress on the online aspect (even Nintendo goes in that direction with GC and the SD Card adaptor and won?t stay out next generation, i?m pretty sure).

Hmm, seems a bit of an odd statement, seen as they're a couple of years off yet. Sure Half-Life 2 will probably be great, but time can serious dampen enthusiasm for a game, as it did with HL on PS2. I'm sure they'll be bigger and badder FPSs on offer on launch that'll use their respected systems more effectively.

I agree! Games consoles are becoming too pc-like lately. I even saw an Xbox version of Rollercoaster Tycoon the other day.

Half Life 2 simply doesnt sound right in the same sentence with Nintendos new console!

What doesn't make sense to me, is that HL2 will play on pretty much any PC - anything that will play HL1... so that means most people, apart from those with Pentium 2s at 233Mhz, and DX3 GFX cards can play, and let's face it, how many people have that?

So, this game is already accessable to most people. By the time the PS3 is released it'll be much cheaper to pick up a 1GHz AMD and a Radeon 9000+ card or summit...

And, this game is MADE for the PC and mods... so why do you want a console version unless you can run downloadable content saved to a HDD, which is looking more likely, but still not for certain.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is great that they can bring this to a lot of people... but it just seems a bit stupid, in this instant anyway!

I don?t think that the future generation of consoles will make such a giant leap forward technically. Just watch the margins between DC/PS2/GC/XBox. Sure there will be improvements but I doubt it will be way ahead of what HL2 is showing on a top notch PC.

Second it seems to me that HL2 will be a kind of a landmark in the fps genre that will endure some time. Look at Halo on Xbox which has not lost it?s appeal to many gamers although it?s pretty old now.

Sure. It?s just that I have a Mac and won?t change that in the near future or maybe never. A second computer is nothing I need nor want.

In general you may be right. Still Valve has obviously come to another conclusion on that matter. I don?t think that they don?t think of these issues. So let?s wait and see. Many of this is pure speculation anyway.

Have fun playing it on your PCs.

Yeah, but you can buy it on XB in 2004...

While of course a PS3 and GC2 release would benefit some people... it still seems like weird decision.
