How do I check my download connection?

I've just upgraded from a 2 meg broadband connection to 10 meg, but it doesn't seem to be making any difference. I've unplugged the modem like I was told, but it just seems as slow as before. Do I need to have a wired connection (im wireless). Can I find out what speed I have?

You can usually see the connected speed in the router management console (Will differ depending on model), just check the broadband connection. Alternatively you can check http://www.speedtest.net/ to get a clearer picture.

Are you sure you can actually get 10Mbps where you are (Or are you on cable?). I know I'm supposed to be able to get up to 8MBps, but I never get more than 5.5Mbps.

It's saying it's 2.40 download speed, so that's nowhere near 10. Virgin siad they're using fibre optic cables and that I had to reset my router. Turned it off and back on after a minute wait, but it's obviously not kicked in...

Yeah, if you're on cable you should basically be getting the advertised speed, give or take a few Kbps.

Do you think I'm not getting the right speed because i'm using wireless? Or do you think it probably hasn't switched on yet?

It's possible, although most WLAN standards should cover the 10Mbps easily. Depends on the quality of the wireless reception/interference etc.

Try wired if you can. I personally never use wireless if I don't have to.

Seems to be normal for Virgin Media. They tell people it's done then it breaks/stays the same. Usually within a day or so it sorts itself out.
