Which version do you have: 40gb, 60gb?

You could try taking it apart and cleaning the vents/fan with compressed air.

I had a Panasonic Q do this, but it was down to the bearings being worn out on the fan, and an off-the-shelf replacement cured the problem.
I'm not familiar with the inner workings of the PS3, but usually re-applying heat transfer paste under the heatsinks, and giving everything a thorough clean should do the trick.
If there's more than one fan, and it sounds noticeably louder than the other (if there's some way to tell), then it probably needs replacing.

I rang game and exchange on 40gig (thats what ive got kit) is 130 quid, so basically for 20 quid+ than refurb i could get an 80gig new one, course i might look pretty strange trading in a ps3 for a ps3 at game

You could trade it in and get the value stuck on a giftcard.
Then you could just come back later in the day etc.

Do you know anyone with another PS3. If so you could place them side by side, in the same conditions etc and see if the fan on yours comes on early.
