I'll offer my 2 cents of experience.
If you don't mind a laptop which will slowly wind down over the years and will be a bastard to find spare parts for, get any number of cheap rebadged taiwanese laptops. You'll find a million of them in Computer Shopper.
If you want something with a bit of build quality and lastability, you'll be looking at an expensive (even 2nd hand) Dell, Compaq, HP etc.
My ?2k AJP laptop (rebadged Kapok, a massive taiwanese laptop oem) of 4 years caught fire the other day when the psu knackered. Not impressed.
