 Mac Superdrive is  Mac SuperCrap

My early 2008 model Macbook Pro is incredibly picky with what DVD-Rs it accepts.

The model of drive is a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N. Known issue or faulty machine?

Known issue. Superdrives in general are pretty awful, and totally unpredictable when it comes to what discs they'll burn. A pro tip is to spray some compressed air into the slot to clear out any dust on the lens, which occurs pretty easily I think. This helped me burn dual layer discs - when I first tried on my seven month old unibody MacBook Pro, it totally rejected them or would only burn the first layer. Having said that, it's still unreliable with burning them now.

Good idea - could do with some more compressed air anyway. Thanks!

Every optical recorder I've ever had on every platform has been temperamental!

For me DVD writers have always been picky. Though the Superdrive is probably less tolerant.

There is a slightly newer firmware for the drive (available from Dell if I recall) which I loaded a few months ago. Seemed a bit more reliable afterwards, but still nowhere near as efficient as it was when new. Oh, you also need to be in Bootcamp on Windows to flash it.

I've never had a drive in my home PC which is as picky as this, but this may be the difference between desktop and laptop drives. Thanks or the info Taka, will try updating the firmware.

That's interesting Taka, I've just started having problems with mine again. It just refuses to burn the second layer of dual layer DVDs, even though it has in the recent past without issue. It's driving me insane, I'm going to the Genius Bar next week but I don't hold out much hope -.-

EDIT: Do you have any links, Taka? I'm having trouble finding it on Google.

You know what gents, you're in luck because I have the firmware installer saved somewhere as well as the patched version which allows for region free DVD playback. Let me know which version you'd prefer and I'll upload it somewhere for you this evening after work.

Please note, this is the firmware is for the exact model that Lyris mentioned in his first post.
