I'm sure he meant Standby... which is what Sky+ can do. I.e you put the box in standby mode, and it still records.

I did call up Sky in the end, and spoke to a rather bored sounding bloke, who obviously went through a script as to why I shouldn't cancel. He said they would only charge me ?16 to watch Cbeebies channel. I said its free on freeview. So he came back by telling me how his Sky broke once and he hated the channels on offer. Pointed out that my sky box has broken several times, and we get back reception due to trees, so I know full well what channels I can get. He came up with several other "points" but I countered all of them. He was a defeated man by the time I had finished with him.

Anyway, the Humax box, with HDMI upscaling, and twin tuners is being delivered on friday. Hurrah.

Good on you. According the the freeview postcode coverage check, I've got 0 (zero) channels available in my postcode. A shame, as Freeview really is the way I want to go.
Come digital switchover, I predict a mass-exodus from Sky. They seem to be more keen on things like developing their '3D' channel (incidentally, this requires a new '3D Ready' TV and a pair of attractive glasses to be worn), than fulfilling the requirements of their current customers (reliable hardware and good service).

These guys do the best dual tuner PVRs, the software can be customised with use created TAPS. Much better than Play TV and they are more flexible than Humax.

I have the older TF5800 and it's brilliant, even the missus finds it easy to use.

I suppose the TopFields are better than PlayTV if you want all the extra gubbins but as a unit that plays and records Freeview I don't see how it's any better really. Last tiem I checked the topfields were just as prone to crashing as the humax units as well. Still, they're cheaper than a PS3+PlayTV I imagine!!

So can my Philips PVR and Digital+ (Spain main satellite provider) box. Both can record in stand-by, without switching on.
