Quick question about the Panasonic Q

    Hey all,

I just have a quickie about the Q since I'm still in serious thoughts about getting one. Basically I want to know how loud it is when it's on. The reason being is that I currently use my XBox as my DVD player, but the f*cker is so damn loud it can drive you to distraction at times. I want a DVD player that is quiet (and no I don't fancy buying an actual DVD player ).

If it's about the same noise level as the GC or PS2 then I'll be happy. If it's the same as the XBox I certianly won't.

lol, strange question, I heard some people on this board complained about the Q's fan noise, but I don't agree at all...I think it's pretty darn quiet and find it good to watch DVDs with...

If you want to hear loud use an OLD Dreamcast

The Q is a little louder than a PS2 or an Xbox when running games, but when running DVDs the GameCube fan gets turned off, so its quieter than both.

Btw, my PS2 is louder than my Xbox...

I have an old dreamcast and it's loud, but nowhere near as loud as my XBox...

And Papercut, your PS2 is LOUDER than your XBox? Do you have a loud PS2 or is your XBox quiet? Maybe my Xbox is louder than most...

Still - great news that it doesn't use the fan when playing DVDs - that means it could be my primary DVD player and not have to worry about noice polution anymore.

        Thanks for the info guys.

Just so you know, the Q doesn't output in RGB for DVDs if thats also another important factor you need to consider.

Yeah it's something I'm taking into consideration but the NTSC-UK review says it's hardly noticable and still preferable over the other two DVD players (ie Xbox and PS2).

I have a modified RGB cable though that I bought for my US cube (before it blew up). Will this work on the Q or do I need a special one for Panasonic's machine? Also, does movie playback still work through a modded RGB lead (but without true RGB colour) or will it need to be taken out through the S-Video for me to get any picture from it?

for panasonic q's you need a different modded cable as it doesn't have the av port that the gamecube does. the cable only does rgb for games though, for dvds you need to use an s-video cable.

for pal dvds you can use the modded rgb cable and it will work fine. no need to use svid.

i have not tested any ntsc dvd although if your tv can display ntsc pics that should work in colour aswell through the modded rgb cable.

of course it will be a composite display not rgb.

I run my Q using a modded RGB cable and it plays US/Jpn games fine as well as all region DVD's.

But yes, an S-Video cable along with a TV which supports it would output a cleaner picture - although what is outputted via the modded RGB cable is fine for me.
