    Online file storage - suggestions?

Hey all, I'm interested in one of these online file storage solutions like Dropbox, Humyo, etc, for a friend of mine who is running a charity.

He needs to transfer large-ish maps (up to 50mb or so, pdf files usually) to and from people in Brazil. Most of the people he'll be dealing with are as tech-savvy as himself (i.e. completely oblivious).

So far we set up ftp access to his web space (company is Names.co.uk) which seemed to be going well but apparently now people from Brazil connecting to the ftp server via Internet Explorer are getting nowhere so naturally we're recommending they install FTP clients (I myself am unable to login to the ftp with Firefox but I'm getting access denied messages whereas they're not even able to connect at all so I've told him to ring up Names and see if they're preventing connections from abroad).

The thing is, putting aside technical skill, there are times when they're at a net cafe without an FTP client (and are blocked from installing one) so I'm wondering about setting up an online file sharing setup that requires no software to download. It doesn't need to sync or any fancy stuff like that, just bare basic upload/download buttons and file lists, really (I doubt they'd even need to make folders). His webspace does have a web-based file manager but it's only accessible by the main account so won't do.

Does anyone know of any that just use java or whatever to do this? It doesn't have to be free, but it would have to work through a regular browser (IE, Firefox, Safari) without needing to download anything. Is there even such a service yet?

Go with Dropbox. You can set up the first account, share a folder for the collaboration and then invite all the other users to create accounts. When they do they'll be automatically added to the share.

You get 2GB storage space for free and can earn more for free (up to 3GB) by inviting other users.

You don't need to install the software on any computers to use your account(s), just use the web interface to upload/download.

Thanks for the reply. Does the web interface need any sort of plugins or the like installed? Even a basic plugin could probably be blocked at a net cafe or workplace.

So far it seems ftp's working ok for now, and I showed how to use Windows' built-in ftp via Explorer. I'll keep Dropbox in mind though...

Dropbox all the way. Used it on countless PC's and it's always worked without having to install any plugins etc. It's an awesome service, and even more so because it's free!

No, no plugins required. Depending on the browser you might just need to switch to the classic uploader thats all.

Sugarsync (which requires a client on the PCs) has a magic briefcase which is shared across all PCs linked to the account. He could drop the file in it and it would start appearing on all the others. If they are at a netcafe, they can access and amend and reupload (back to the client PCs) anything that has already been backed up by the client.

I'm gonna be sneaky and put my Dropbox referral link here, anyone who uses it to sign up gets an extra free 250MB of storage as will my kind self!
