PS3 Cell-powered telly of the FUTURE!

BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

The BBC's Richard Taylor takes a look at Toshiba's new television at the CEATEC developers' conference in Tokyo.
The Cell Regza television incorporates a powerful processor and high capacity memory to allow HD viewing and multiple channel recording, which Toshiba says is the 'next generation' of TV.
It's powered by a Cell processor "which packs some serious grunt" and can do things like take a standard signal and make it look a lot more detailed, making SD content look more akin to HD.

HD content is made to be "Ultra High Definition"!

Not only that, but it's got 3 terabytes of storage, and has built in 8 tuners (count 'em!) and you can record up to 26 hours of telly simultaneously.

So you can record a whole day's telly on 8 channels, then navigate through the content using keyword searches, thumbnails and content trees.

It's coming out before the end of '09 in Japan and the rest of the world in 2010, by which time Toshiba are hoping they can add 3D to any broadcast.

This is all amazing stuff, but I can imagine somebody bumping this thread in a few years time and it's all standard issue on tellies eventually!

I think there will be large advances in television within the next 3 years like this, glad I wasn't caught out by the great LCD scam!

I wonder if this is just their marketing department's spin on TVs feature edge-adaptive scaling (which the Playstation 3 already features for SD DVD playback). We shall see, though...

This wireless HD malarkey doesnt make sense to me........

Surely the TV still needs to be plugged in to a power outlet = wire 0_o

Perhaps it runs on two AA batteries.
