Connecting an Ext Hard Drive to a PS3

A noob-ish question from me again..........

I have an external (Lacie) 500 gig & 1.5 TB Hard Drive with lots of ripped avi movies and mp3s (its a convienient way of having everything in one place).

Anyways, is it possible to just hook the hard drive up to my ps3 via the USB port and play the media on it? Or will the ps3 automatically start formating my PC formated hard drive upon connection - in which case erasing all my stuff.

I want to watch stuff on my LCD/plasma TV rather than on my monitor.

basically, i jus wanna know how easy it is to watch my shiz on a TV via an external hard disk.

    Thanks in advance..........

Just plug it in, press triangle on it in the menu and select 'display all' you should then see all your films.

No, it won't erase or format it on connection. Should be as simple as plug and play

You can just hook them up without worrying about it reformatting, however it'll only recognise FAT partitions. Anything partitioned as NTFS won't be recognised.

If you create a "VIDEO" folder, it will check everything in there without having to display all. Does the same for MUSIC and PHOTO.
Just makes it a little smoother but not worth it for lots of stuff.

doesn't it have to be \ps3\video? I can't remember to be honest.

              I believe it does both.

do you have the HDD plugged into your PC and is it on the internet, along with the PS3? why not download TVersity? is perfect for streaming to ps3, i do it wirelessly and its perfect. might be even easier and means you can keep it on the pc anyway, adding things on the fly.
