Resident Evil 5 - Frame rate horrific

    Hello

I bought Res 5 off steam during their deals last week but when I ran the game it was at some truly horrendous framerate (I didnt even get into the game, the intro was like still shots)

I managed to get to the title screen and run the benchmark only for it to be running at less then 1 fps =< (I wa using the default settings 1024 res medium graphics)

    My pc is currently:
    Windows XP
    3.01ghz AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
Geforce 9800 GT (Manafacturer overclocked variant)
    2GB DDR RAM

Surely I meet the specs required? am I missing some additional software needed for this game or something?

any information appreciated as otherwise I'll have to talk to steam about a refund

There's no reason you shouldn't be able to run it, I get between 35fps and 60fps (capped at 30fps in-game) on my 8400m GS, which is a much lower card.

The obvious questions, do you have a relatively recent driver, latest Direct X (August 2009) and have PhysX enabled/disabled.

      ah driver is dated 07/10/2008

Theres a reason I downloaded newer drivers but found my desktop image looked somehow blurrier, almost like on a n64 game,

Also the settings sliders changed so I could never get the brightness/contrast quite right (why they had to change the sliders at all is beyond me)

I could understand this could be a cause why it'd make the pre title screen movie as jerky as stated though is beyond me as surely thats all rendered video not realtime?

The driect X updated itself as I ran the game so I'm assuming thats the latest version? and I'm pretty sure I have PhysX on here as it has a PhysX properties in my Nvidia start menu folder

try turning physX off, that can impact performance (although not usually anywhere near as bad as you're experiencing)

Don't think the game uses Physx, so won't see any benefit adjusting that. I'd just put it down to you needing to update your graphics driver.

If I go that route whats the best way to go about it? Unistall old driver then install new? or uninstall then use one of those cleanup programs?

Uninstall old, reboot, install new, reboot. Don't bother with driver cleaning apps, not really needed (unless you were changing graphics card vendor, then perhaps).

Have you defragged? - my hard drive looks a mess after installing a Steam game.
