The old help me choose a TV thread. Again!

I'm currently in the market for either a 37" or 40" new TV, and to be honest the options are overwhelming. I'm looking to spend in the region of 600-700 and really need some advice.

What I really want is true 1080p with a great picture quality. I mainly use headhones to listen to shows so a good speaker isnt essential.

The first TV that caught my eye was the new Sharp Aquos LED backlit TV LC40LE600E. It seems nice and bright. Full 1080p with some great eco features.

However then I looked at the Panasonic TX-P37G10. This TV has a built in freesat receiver. Which seeing as we have a communal dish on the side of the apartments possibly means I could get BBC HD and ITV HD for the same price. It also seems to feature a nice games mode and less motion blur according to the blurb. This is also avaliable in a 42" version for very little more.

I have to be honest here and say I really don't want a Samsung TV. I have had bad experiences with their products in the past and with their customer services.

So I guess what I'm asking is has anyone got experience of these TV's or can recommend me one in this price range that I may have missed?

    Regards Carl

I can't comment on the Sharp but I've got the 42" Panasonic G10 and for cinematic viewing it's excellent - very natural colours, great contrast levels, and very smooth movement.

I also game a fair amount on it and the response from the panel and with regard to input lag is also excellent. I had some slight image retention after playing Borderlands solidly for 5 days, but apart from that haven't noticed any issues.

The only negatives I can think of are which are more related to the plasma technology rather than this specific model are 1) I haven't noticed them myself, but I know some people are sensitive to phosphor trails when playing games so it would be worth getting a demo of one in person to check if you are susceptible. 2) The panel buzzes slightly when displaying very bright (i.e. close to all white) images, which is quite normal for plasma panels but if this is something that will annoy you it would again be worth checking in person. 3) Unlike LCDs the plasma panel has a glass front so if you are somewhere where you are going to be getting direct bright light on the screen you may notice reflections so it's worth considering the placement of the unit.

Overall I'm very pleased with mine (picked it up for ?709 from Richer Sounds) and it's stunning for blu-ray viewing and excellent for gaming. SD veiwing via Freeview is a little soft but that's to be expected from a full HD panel.

Wait until next year and get a set with a DVB-T2 receiver for Freeview HD unless you already have another source of HD TV (Sky HD/Virgin Media).

EDIT- Ignore, just saw your mention of Freesat.

Oh god no. Lots wrong with those displays, but they are very eco-friendly.

For around 600 pounds (sorry, don't have the key on this US layout!), the Panasonic PDPs are excellent.

If you want to save money and don't mind a) losing the satellite tuner and b) going the LCD route, look for a Samsung LE40B550. If you read the review, I was delighted with the performance for the price. RRP is 900, but I picked one up from Costco as a secondary display for about 420 pounds with a coupon
