    I get you now bud. Yes, you'll need a JPN Utility disc. You could borrow mine if you wanted to. Of course you won't be able to play the USA FFXI, but you could use your HDD as a giant memory card to eliminate the need for more than one memory card. You will need a network adapter BTW.

        And you can install games to the HDD.

        I recently got a PS2 HDD adaptor off of my friend for £4. I used my old swap magic to load the ELF required to install the independance exploit. Now I can ftp to my PS2 and shove programs on the memory card, I can also use a program to copy games from my PC DVD drive directly to the PS2 HDD - so even if it isn't chipped you're able to install different region games and backups and play them no problemo.
