Secondhand PS2 (SCPH-50003) PAL UK, two DS2 D'Pads not working

Quick question - bought a PS2 off Ebay, which felt like a good deal. Unfortunately upon plugging it in today, neither DS2's d'pad works going left, or up in either port. Also on Gradius 5 one of the DS2 got stuck and when into a loop of continuously going down.

Now the sellers has offered a refund, although given postage costs this could mean I'm down ?20. However I just wondered if people have come across this before? Is it likely to be both pads that are faulty, or the PS2 itself? Unfortunately I don't have another DS2 or PS2 pad > USB adaptor to test.

The machine appears to be in OK condition. Both controllers are the 8-pin revisions.

Sounds like the ports are dodgy. Less than £20 to replace too.

Might just need a good clean though.
    Kept you waiting, huh?

Cheers for the reply. Cost me ?30 so replacing the ports isn't worth it.

Will try cleaning the ports with a laptop cleaning kit I've got. But if still not working I'm torn on what to do. Return it and lose ?20. Of get stuck with something that clearly doesn't work.

The seller maintains that the unit was tested the night before being sent.

It's not impossible but I'd be surprised if it was the ports or the controller plugs. Official PS2 Dualshock plugs and leads are very difficult to damage accidentally and if both are experiencing identical problems in both ports I'd think it most likely a problem with the pads. What is the likelyhood of both ports or both plugs being damaged or faulty in just the same way?

Obviously you should look at the plug contacts/ports under a magnifying glass for blockages or 'deposits'. But the next thing I'd do is to try the console with a controller which you know is good, if this is possible.

If it is the used controllers the touch pads under the buttons concerned could simply be worn through regular use. I've gone through a dozen Dualshocks in the same number of years and in all case bar one it was the rubberised touch pads splitting or wearing away their conductive coating, Tekken and other fighting games are the principle culprit for me and usually it's the X or SQUARE buttons that go first.

I'd also have a look at the screw heads holding the controllers together. I wouldn't be surprised if they showed evidence of being unscrewed. If more than a couple show black paint missing from the Philips cross-head area you can be pretty sure they've been taken apart.

If so there's no telling what was done inside. It might just be they were put back together incorrectly or somebody has fitted worn, cannibalised parts from another controller or something like that.

You won't know exactly what that is without dismantling them yourself. If you hope to get your money back that is not a good idea unless a). you know what you're looking for and b). you're sure you can put them back together again.

I have loads of spare parts for fat PS2s if you need anything.

I had my controller ports go once. Easy fix as my mate had loads of spares.

Cheers guys and thank you for the kind offers.

I've decided that althought its a hassle to return, I'm going to cut my loses on this PS2. It's odd becuase the unit was in reasonable condition with no visable gunk, contact or damage to the ports or pads - although it's clear the unit has had a fair degree of use. However I've just decided that to invest more time in this unit when I not 100% happy with it, isn't really worth it.

So I'll nab another PS2 when a mint one comes up again (I've got a suitable wanted thread too).

The point was the ports hadn't gone entirely, they were still working otherwise OK. It was a problem with specific button functions which suggested to me a more likely wear and tear issue or other fault in the controllers.

I had similar trouble myself a few months back (described in another thread here) where a DS2 controller suddenly stopped working properly just after a Tekken 5 session. Long story but I quickly determined it was a specific controller fault and not the ports, although that was my initial suspicion.

Why not just buy replacement ports bud? I've used this company a few times before and they've been great!

I think becuase like fallenangle said, it's more likely to be the pads. And tbh I bought this silver PS2 with two pads, so if neither works that yet more cost for me. Even then I could buy another DS2 and then find out it's the ports.

Easier to start from scratch, and just lose the postage on this.

I have bought a Playstation 2 Satin Silver, the big one, and there were two silver dualshocks. On first one there wasnt working one arrow and one button, on second one, two buttons, one arrow and r1 or something. So its the **** Playstation 2 controllers, which are really low quality, broking all the time.

                        Thanks to everyone who posted.

In the end I did order a new DS2 of Amazon and that worked 100% so it was the controllers in this instance. Surprised me given they both did the exact same thing, but I guess weren't that great in quality or mistreated.

Was never 100% happy with the purchase and one I'll have to put down to experience (seems a common pattern at the moment, see Bargains > GAME sale thread but I do now have a working PS2.

I've had similar PS2 controller issues recently, where half the buttons stopped working on two different controllers just a couple of days apart.

The first just stopped working properly without an obvious reason (Sony DS2), the second (Hori Turbo thing) died at the exact moment I zapped it with static electricity (by picking it up wearing rubber soled shoes), and failed in the same way (half the face buttons not working).

So, you never know, it might have been that.

Also a partly yanked controller port ribbon cable has nixed a single memory card port for me in the past, with mc port 1 and both controller ports being fine.
