fzero gx - ghosts

ive unlocked a few ghosts, but, after pressing Y (or is it X?) on the track select screen, I go to race them. When Im actually racing, I cant see any ghost cars anywhere. Do you race against a actual ship, or it is merely against their times?
If the former, any ideas what Im doing wrong?

After you load them up you must select each of them with either Y or X (I can't remember either - LOL!) to turn them yellow.

Press Y to bring up the ghosts. Then highlight the ghost(s) you want to race against by pressing X.
