What Xbox 360 chipset will I get?

My 2nd 360 elite (no HDMI) died last night, and i arranged a repair through MS (despite it being outside of the 3 years which i thought was pretty good customer service to give them dues for a change ).
What chipset 360 am i likley to get back? Are they sending out Jaspers now, and should I be safe from RRoD in future?
I'm guessing i won't be lucky enough to get a HDMI enabled machine back?

All elite units have HDMi don't they? I thought that was the whole point of them when the launched. Is it a premium (a White machine)?

They designed a special non hdmi jasper type chipset for repairs, so you'll probably get one of those.

Oops, you're right... mine was a Pro or Premium or whatever the hell MS call them, not an Elite.
Boo hiss boo to non-HDMI, but i can't really complain so long as i get a machine that won't likely die on it's arse in 6 months time...
      Thanks.

I got back a non-HDMI premium when I sent mine off earlier this month.

How do you tell what chipset it is?

Look on the label on the back.
The original versions had a current rating of 16.5A and this was the Xenon/Zephyr chipset.
The 2nd generation had a current rating of 14.2A, the Opus/Falcon chipset.
The latest generation has a rating of 12.1A this is the Jasper chipset.

Not necessarily true, as i am just working on a refurbed Opus board in its original shell, which is from a Xenon. (hence marked 16.5)

It also has the new style gpu heatsink but original copper piped cpu one.

Yours is probably this Pat. They all fail though so its much of a muchness.

I think MS only send Opus and Falcons onwards out now, as the Zenon 203w machines would just come straight back to them.

All the retail units by now are Jaspers, so who can say until you get it back...

I seem to remember reading that the only 'true way' to be sure of the revision was to look at the consoles power socket 'prongs/notches', as they are different between the revisions. You can check by using this picture:-

Make sure to look at the consoles power socket, not the power supplies plug - as the plugs are 'upwards compatible' meaning you can use an old plug/power supply on a newer console, but cannot use a new plug/power supply on an older console - this is by design because the newer revisions need less power.

Apparently it is quite common to find early Jaspers in the 'old' cases which still state 14.2A on the label so thats not a reliable indicator. Also you can find Jaspers bundled with the older Falcon/Opus 14.2A power supplies because they still fit (Microsoft just uses up old stock until it runs out)

As you have a non-HDMI model you will likely receive a non-HDMI model back - so I imagine you will get an Opus, as thats the most recent non-HDMI revision and was specifically made for repairs of non-HDMI models:-

There are only two non-HDMI motherboard revisions so by comparing the power plug sockets you should be able to tell if Microsoft have fitted a Xenon (I hope not!) or an Opus motherboard.

                  I hope that helps

P.S. Be glad you dont own this messed up limited edition!:-
Know who won that Fable II signed Xbox 360 contest? Some guy named NeoxDonut. He was thrilled to get the Peter Molyneux autographed console. That is, until he tried plugging it in.

Mine looks most like the first one, i.e. Xenon/Zephyr. It's got that middle black prong. :/

Since your is a non-HDMI model you must have a Xenon. Its quite surprising to hear that a launch machine was still running up until now! I have read guess-timates that the failure rate of the Xenon was around 70-80%, or maybe even higher.

Microsoft may just repair your current motherboard, in which case you will get a Xenon back - but hopefully they will replace it with an Opus Expecially when you consider the Xenon failure rate (Which might even be why they are being so nice as to fix yours outside of the 3 year warranty)

The Opus motherboard is supposedly quite reliable - not as good as a Jasper, but certainly a lot better than the Xenon you currently have.

...Then again, even Jasper's have been reported to RROD on occasion

Well i got mine back today, and although it appears to be a new unit (it says so on the covering letter, and it's certainly not the one i sent off) it appears to be a Xenon/Zephyr i have back as it has that middle prong on the PSU
I'm guessing if this one dies in, say, a month my warranty won't have been extended either so i'll effectively be stuffed??

Does anyone know iff Game/Gamestation are doing a decent trade in on 360s towards a new HDMI model as to be honest i'd rather trade thisone in now and get the bonus of HDMI...

Sorry to hear that You probably already know this but just to double check, are you looking at the power socket on the console? I only ask as you mentioned the 'middle prong on the PSU', but the Xbox 360 has a totally separate external block for the Power Supply Unit.

I'm afraid I have no idea what the current trade in price is for an Xbox 360

Someone was quoted approx. £100 to trade an Elite at Cex, so £70 maybe?

You should now have a warranty from MS for 6 months. Off the top of my head, that's what I got recently.

Yeah the power socket on the console itself Ah well if (when) it dies again i'll just have a moan up again and see where i get with it.
