    Windows not detecting onboard sound

Seeing as I have a spare copy of Vista, I decided to see what all the fuss was about and removed my XP install to give Vista a whirl. Well, to cut a long story short I wasn?t impressed, and today I ended up reinstalling XP Pro.

Now, everything went fine (and I?ve never had a problem installing drivers before my little Vista adventure) until I tried to install the audio drivers.

About half way through the install the message ?No HD Audio Device found? or something to that effect, popped up. I went to check the device manager and there?s two PCI devices with question marks next to them and no HD Audio device. I?ve tried installing the audio driver on the two PCI devices I mentioned with no luck.

Basically, tried Vista, only installed the ethernet and audio drivers, went back to XP and now I have no sound?

Need to know what soundcard/chip you're using really. I'd imagine it's probably due to the device being UAA compliant, which needs an additional driver installed beforehand when dealing with XP (although this is usually bundled with the driver software itself if needed...).

Just reinstalled Vista and I had sound straight away. I don’t get it, I’m completely wiping the HDD before installing - I only have one OS on at a time :S

      Sorry Hohum.

      Motherboard -P45 P5Q Pro Turbo
VIA Onboard 8 channel HD Audio

I’ll look for the Driver version in a second.

        - Went into the bios to check if onboard sound was disabled. It's enabled.

        - resetting bios to default settings did nothing.

        - checked device manager after installing every other driver (again) and the only ones left are two PCI Devices. - assume one of them is the HD Audio Bus but the drivers won't install on either.

Check the manufacturer (both mainboard and sound chip) website for updated XP drivers and to see if there's a knowledge base for XP problems.

You would do if the sound chip is UAA compliant (means it can operate with a basic generic driver if need be). Needs an additional driver installed in XP beforehand though.

Easiest link I could find, give it a go. Should be able to install the Via driver afterwards.

              Thank you Hohum!!

I should mention I just went to install the same disc on an old laptop and encountered the exact same problem - no sound showing. All the other drivers went on fine.
