is it worth trying to sell CRT's now???

    Quick question guys.

My parents & my bro have just got brand new LCD 1080p panels & I'm seriously jealous...they look soooooo sexy PQ is top notch & the PS3/360's looks immense on there

So now I'm wondering if I should get rid of my CRT & finally join the LCD brigrade but I could do with getting rid of the CRT first only thing is I dont know if it's actually worth trying to flog it.

It's the 32" JVC HD CRT so do you think that people would be interested in paying money for it seeing as it's teh RareZ!!!111!!

I'm always on the lookout for a cheap CRT (a sony wega 21" 4:3 I recall two uni mates having and the ps2's looking brilliant!) for my old consoles, not that I ever play them but looking to connect back up my ps2 (imports, PS3 takes care of the PAL stuff) and DC as they all look crap on the HD tv's.

Just upgraded my Samsung 40" M86 to a Sony 55x4500 and yes BD's and the current gen consoles look great so it depends on what you need it for. Gaming and movies and if your CRT is full HD.

So if its justifiable, then yeah buy a new tv. Only challenge I see in selling a CRT is the weight to ship unless someone can collect. Think someone was selling a CRT for like a fiver in the trading forum except was collection only otherwise I'd have snapped it up.

I'd advertise it cheap with collection and just be patient, someone will eventually want it, buy an LCD/Plasma in the mean time while you wait.

Indeed. I picked up a nice 26 wich CRT for 40 notes a few months back. Lovely for pre HD gaming but just need to be patient.

I use the same tv for anything standard def and for dvd and Wii it'll be a downgrade going for a panel.

Why get a plasma and keep the crt - best of both worlds

            I've got a 14" Trinitron (£5), 28" Trinitron (£23) and 36" Widescreeen Toshiba (£40) (component :3).

I'd like a 37" 1080p LCD some time, but I'm not sure how my PS2 will look on it.

Maybe if you tout the HD feature of the JVC, you're more likely to get some interest. Try quoting the maximum resolution and connection methods etc in your ads.

It's a shame the whole HD CRT thing never really took off in Europe. They were quite popular in Japan and the USA for most of the last decade. In comparison it's only very recently the LCD TV's have caught up with regards to contrast ratio and response times (LED back-lighting etc).
Even then I'd still prefer to watch standard-def material and play retro games on a CRT.

The size is the main thing against them. We have a 32" CRT for communal us in this house and everyone calls it the Death Star, but most of us have 40"+ HDTVs that take up far less space. Round my parents' house they have a 28" CRT and it protrudes into the room way more than my 42" plasma would.

Besides, if you got a plasma instead of an LCD the drop in image quality from a CRT wouldn't have been as massive

Are you talking about the 32" WS JVC HV32P37? CV, S-Video, 2 x RGB SCART, 1 x CV/S-Video SCART and Component YPbPr. Capable of 480i, 576i, 480p, 576p, 1080i from external sources. 137W/2W standby so it's 'green' credentials are at least as good and probably way better than anything you're likely to replace it with.

As most experts agree, in sub 40" screen sizes the difference between 720p/1080i/1080p 'HDTV' is minimal at correct viewing distances. So as long as your console/game scales 720p to 1080i you're good for the current gaming generation. That TV always was regarded as one of the best 32" WS TVs available in the UK for DVD viewing. In its size category you simply won't find better all round PQ for the types of uses we here are most interested in.

Not so brilliant on SD broadcasts though but it gives a good account of itself with my Freeview STB via RGB SCART.

Unless you have some good practical reason why get rid of it? It'll sell at a pitance and even at their best it is highly unlikely a LCD/Plasma is going to be as good for SD sources like 'retro' consoles.

                      CRT are fairly worthless nowadays

I picked up a Sony KV36HQ100 WEGA (flagship set) for £175

I think it was about £2300 when new....

Thats the exact one...you been hiding in my flat

You see thats the thing I think it's utterly perfect but when I started seeing the way games looked on my brothers new 1080p panel I think I started to get a bit of the green eyed monster...the way it's setup makes everything look brilliantly crisp & bright whereas my CRT @ 1080i is a little soft but I think thats down to set up issues & not PQ itself.

TBH I have no real reason to get rid other than changing upto new tech for a bigger screen but in a 3metre room where I sit maybe 1.5-2metres from the set it's hardly worth it.

I think I'll just hold out now till it dies & I absolutley HAVE to upgrade.

Thanks for the opinions guys you've just saved me a fair chunk of wedge & no doubt some buyers remorse when I realised the LCD/Plasma isnt as good

I got £35 on ebay for my one

I replaced it with a 32" Toshiba 1080p LCD for £375 and have never looked back.

For sure, the 576p DVD picture was amazing, 1080i HDTV looked sharper than it does now on my 1080p LCD.

The CRT has nearly killed humans it was so big.

I wouldnt have got rid of it but on white backgrounds the picture started to bow in a big way.

But feature wise and for overal usage, the LCD wins.

I remember this model. The US version was HD compatible, but IIRC they didn't include the correct inputs on the European version.

it was certainly 480p compatable (component - US model) - UK RGB only

RGB is all i needed it for though
