Advice needed for replacement hard drive

Bought a used Dell Inspiron 6400 for one of the kids last week.

    100gb hard drive
    1gb memory
Pro T2080 1.73GHZ prossesor dual core
    Windows Vista

Has been working 100% until an automatic service update last night resulted in it failing to boot properly.

Resorted to a reinstall, but now have the "This disk may fail soon. if other harddisk is available, install to another location" message.

If I try anyway, it just hangs part way through installation....so assume the hard drive does need replacing?

Found a how to on youtube, and looks easy enough, but would be very grateful for any links to a suitable replacement.

    Many Thanks

Any regular height 2.5" SATA HDD will be fine. Only the really high capacity ones tend to be taller so upto approx. 320Gb. You have the reinstall CD too?

Yes, have the Dell and Vista discs.

Excuse my ignorance, but is this what I need?: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=2...+top&_osacat=0

I'd advise against buying HDDs from Ebay unless you can confirm they've a full manufacturer's warrenty. HDDs can often be DoA or fail in the first few days from damage they received in transit.

The WD drives are pretty reliable and that one is fine.

I have one of those WD Blue drives and it's great. It's fast and quiet.

I'm interested in your Vista update thing, though. A friend's Vaio did exactly the same thing - buggered up after a Vista update and when she ran the Vaio diagnostics it said the hard drive surface scan had failed (i.e. the drive probably had a bad sector). I got her to run the recovery anyway and she hasn't had any problem since. Strange, though...

That's what I was hoping for. Have tried it repeatedly though today with no joy
