    Reccommend me a speaker package...

    following on from this: http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/showthread.php?t=102682

I'm now in possession of the Samsung which i'm mighty happy with, just one small flaw.. the sound is peasant spec and -100% worse than the 5 year old Toshiba LCD which now resides in the bedroom..

i've never had an amp/speaker set up and desperately need to get one now as I really can't cope with the poor sound and complete lack of bass!..

my budget is very tight, so cheaper the better.

    cheers
    Russ

    Bit too vague info wise?

basically have ps3 and wii connected currently & I rotate my retro consoles, so just film/tv & gaming, doesn't need to be monster spec, just something that will give me that needed oomph as the bass is pathetic from the tv alone

could I get away with just speakers/sub connected to the tv?

I'm pretty clueless in thus dept as it's something I've never bothered with.

ok got off my lazy a$$ and have done some researching, i've come up with this setup: http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/2750...ch-home-c.html

am I right in thinking that the dvd player acts as the amp to run the whole setup?..

or can this be disregarded as I dont actually want it clogging up my neatly spaced out setup

        Hi mate,

I had a look at the tech specs and there are no extra HDMI inputs on that so you wouldn't be able to hook up a Blu-ray player, Xbox 360, PS3 or TV set top box. Also by design you would probably find the sound lacking if compared to a dedicated AV amp. Also as it is a DVD player/amp arrangement it doesn't have decoding for the HD sound formats or the required anologue inputs to take decoded sound from a Blu-ray player.

          I have a goodun

I have one of these under my Samsung LCD:

Looking for the best-in-class Hifi & Home Audio? Than look no further. Superfi offer w wide range of Hifi products, ranging across TVs, Home Cinema, Hifi Systems, Speakers, Amplifiers, Turntables, and much, much more. Discover Superfi and unlock visual & audio excellence.

It was expensive but it looks really good mounted under the telly. To be honest the sound is miles better than the telly's speakers but not really any better than through my Yamaha hifi, maybe just go for a new hifi or Ipod Dock with Aux?

I've got the Samsung HT-315 connected to my 50" sammy and find it perfectly good for my sound.

I have all my consoles connected as well. I have my DVD connected to my plasma via HDMI and Optical and have full surround on all my consoles so i'm assuming that the TV acts as a bridge. Not sure though as AV isn't my strong point. You may be better going to AV forums where the dedicated experts are tbh

Seeing as you're on a tight budget, my advice would be to buy the gear second-hand on eBay. If buying second-hand doesn't appeal to you, I'd say buy what you need (amp, front speakers, sub, centre speaker, surrounds, etc.) in stages as and when you can afford it. I say that because cheap speakers, especially cheap subwoofers, sound awful. If you're really desperate to have the whole package now then I'd opt for a good quality low-powered amp and good quality small speakers rather than a high powered but poor quality system. Too much bass, especially flabby bass, kills sound quality.

And, yeah, avforums.com is your friend.

If you have the room, I'd go for a budget stereo amp and budget bookshelf or floorstand speakers. Budget AV equipment can sound grim, but there are loads of bargains to be had for stereo gear and you can get some really good quality stuff, especially if you don't need to compromise on space.

                  This:

will sound a bajillion times better than any AV setup costing twice the money. If you want to 5.1 later on, you can re-use the speakers as rears.

Also, you need to think about audio delay. If you buy any AV set up where your components (DVD, PS3, XBox, etc) are connecting directly to the amp, the amp needs to be able to delay the audio to match the image (as the TV will take a few milliseconds to produce the image).

The advantage of going stereo is that you can connect from the analogue audio outs on the back of the TV directly to the amp and your sound will be perfectly in sync with the image.

for the money i think i'm onto a winner... yeah I could have had any old system and been blown away as i've never used av gear [the shame], but I want the whole 9 yards.. space isn't a massive issue either..

                    bring it on!
