Thinking of getting one of these so I can play some of my old records, but wondered if they work with the PS3 since I have a nice surround sound set up? Anybody tried this?

All depends if it presents itself as a mass storage device, requires any drivers or application software on a PC. -

These are rubbish, mate. They're just a turntable with a USB audio-capture device built-in. I'm pretty sure they need drivers for your PC, so I doubt it'll work with your PS3.
Generally speaking you'd be better off buying a good quality turntable secondhand (I'm sure there are loads of these available, from when LPs were the choice of hi-fi enthusiasts) and plugging it into your PC's mic socket. I think you need a pre-amp, but likewise secondhand.
The USB turntables are really cheap and nasty, so I really think they're best avoided.Comment

Strolls is right. The reviews I've seen (one was being sold by Maplin at the time) say they're crappety-crap. One of the issues is that, because they're so light, vibrations from the needle get picked up and recorded along with the actual music.
If I were in your boat I'd also try grabbing a second-hand one+pre-amp. I've been thinking about it but space and noise are stopping me (I could listen on my big headphones but that's a lot of space, hassle and cost to listen to stuff on headphones!). It doesn't help that every time I go to HMV and wind up in the vinyl section, Daft Punk stuff beckons me to come hither and buy

Cheers guys, I know I should be looking for a proper record player, but space is an issue for me too and was hoping I could use the things that are already taking up space (is it not the future yet?) Guess I'll wait then until I move some place bigger, you know, with a library...LOL!1Comment

I was thinking about getting one of those little ones that are smaller than a record, and the record goes over the edge. Or if you're really trapped for space, what about a Vinyl Killer?

There were a lot of places punting these out at Christmas a couple of years ago, like offers in the Sunday Times and stuff like that, for about ?95. When you see one, that price is shocking - they're just cheap and nasty crap. One of these guys had a huge record collection - he much be in his late 40s or even in his 50s, was buying LPs since he was a kid and until a few years ago, and has obviously been fortunate never to have had his collection "purged" by unforeseen circumstances. It takes up a whole wall of his living room, and he spent some time recording these with this turntable (despite having a good hi-fi already
) before realising that he could get all the same songs at better quality from Limewire for free.
What I'm pretty sure you want to look for is a decent quality hi-fi turntable - you don't need any of the other stuff, like the tuner or the amp of a full-size set of "separates". Those USB turntables are basically only a little larger than 12" square, and a good hi-fi turntable will be about the same size. I think you can get really small plastic made-in-China pre-amps on eBay for ?10, and I would have thought that would be adequate for ripping.Originally posted by spagmasterswift View Post
